Chapter Seventeen

“I’m Detective Robertson from the Drug Investigation Division. I’m here to conduct an investigation.” He turned to Matt. “Dr. Winston, we meet again. This time I’ll ask you to stay. I have questions for all of you. Can the patient answer questions?”

“Yes, I can,” Mia said in a tired murmur.

“Mrs. Clark, I’ll start with you.”

“My name is Dr. Hammer,” Brenda returned the detective’s cold stare. “This is Tyron Clark, Mia’s dad, who’s come from Chicago after I notified him about the accident.”

The detective nodded. “Dr. Hammer, you dropped off your daughter and her friend Emily at the school for the homecoming party.”

“Yes, and Emily’s young brother. I wanted to drive them all back, but they told me Emily’s parents would pick them up later.”

“Are you sure of that?”

“Yes, I always drive Mia back and forth from wherever she goes.”

“Mr. and Mrs. Alvery claim that you insisted on doing the driving both ways and then forgot to pick up the kids.”

“No, that’s absolutely wrong.”

“Detective,” Mia called, her voice hardly audible. “Emily told me that her mom would drive us back, and that’s what I told my mother.”

“Someone is lying here,” the detective said.

“Yes, and you’d better find out who,” Tyron retorted icily.

Mentally, Matt gave him a thumbs up for stepping in to defend his daughter and her mother.

“When I realized that Emily’s mom wasn’t coming I called and texted my mom,” Mia added.

“You texted her three times, but she didn’t answer. She was too busy. Where were you Dr. Hammer?”

“At the Aronoff Center for the ballet performance. I turned off my phone after Mia texted me she was having a lot of fun. Unfortunately, I forgot to turn it on until later, and I missed Mia’s later texts.”

“Did Mr. Clark have his phone on?”

“Tyron was not with me. I told you he lives in Chicago. We separated ten years ago.”

“May I ask who was with you?”

“No. It has nothing to do with the accident.”

Was Brenda protecting him? Matt had nothing to hide from the detective or Tyron or anyone around.

“I invited Dr. Hammer to the ballet. Is there anything wrong with that Detective Robertson?”

“No, but then you operated on her daughter. Isn’t that a conflict of interest?”

“Absolutely not. Mia is not a relative. She needed a good surgeon right away. I was the only one available.”

“Did you order and receive the blood and urine tests?”

“No, they were ordered by the ER’s attending physician, Dr. Manzoni at the request of Sheriff Turner. I saw the results this morning when Nurse Marly brought them to me.”

“Isn’t it strange that the only one who didn’t show positive drug results is the patient you operated on?”

“Are you questioning my integrity?” Matt narrowed his eyes.
