Yes. She immediately thumbed.

“Done,” she whispered to herself. Oh God, she’d be leaving this slum after ten years. Her eyes filled with tears. She’d never thought she would work up the courage to break with the past. Everything had happened so fast. Meeting Rafael, changing careers, finding a modern apartment in an upscale neighborhood. She had a new lease on life, and it had all happened tonight—after she’d kissed Rafael.

Had he given her the energy to finally turn the page?

Had he made a bumpy landing on the hospital helipad, she would have remained hidden and gone home without meeting him, without kissing him. She would never have signed her new job offer and wouldn’t have decided to move.

Her phone vibrated. “Did you send the signed contract?”

“Yes, thank you, Rafael. I owe you so much.”

“You owe me nothing. It’s all—” Screaming and shouting burst out from the building hallway.

Trying to stifle the outdoor noise, Arianna covered her phone with her hand. The last thing she wanted was for Rafael to discover the slum where she lived.

“What’s going on?” Concern fractured his voice.

“Nothing to worry about.” Bummer, if only the new neighbors could stop fighting.

“Arianna, this is serious. I can hear it through the phone.”

“Just the neighbors arguing.” Right then, the bellows escalated.I’ll kill you.The words resonated loud and clear over the line. Arianna sighed.

“Your address?”

“What? Why?”

“I’m coming.”

“No, don’t worry. It happens often.”

“I’ll find it. See you soon.” He ended the connection.

She called him back right away. “Rafael, please, don’t come. When these things occur, it’s safer to stay in my apartment, behind locked doors. These people may have knives or guns. They’ll calm down soon, or kill each other, and the police will come. Don’t try to interfere, or they’ll all turn against you.”

“But you’re in danger.”

“No, not as long as I don’t open my door.”

“I’m on my way. I got your address from the SAMF.”

“No please.”

“I’ll stay in my car, unless things deteriorate. Don’t worry I have a gun.”

“I have one too, but I would prefer not to use it.”

He chuckled. “Same here.”

The screams had stopped, and the noise ebbed. “I think they’ve called a truce. I don’t hear them anymore. They’ve probably gone back to their own apartments.”

“Good.”

She frowned. Good what? She hoped he was making a U-turn.

“You see you didn’t have to concern yourself. Now, go back home and rest. Sorry, I’ve disturb you needlessly.”

“Youdidn’t disturb me. Arianna, you have to understand something. My job is to rescue people. You’ll be working with me. You’re a unique, fearless, and very precious flight nurse. As such, I feel responsible for your safety. If you’re in danger I won’t hesitate to rescue you.”
