Chapter Six

Rafael watched her play the accomplished hostess. “Your kitchen smells like a starving man’s heaven—garlic, nutmeg, oregano, and other yummy aromas.” His stomach grumbled in unison with his words.

“The food is ready. Tonight, we’ll have eggplant cooked with ground beef and tomato with jasmine rice on the side. I think the plates are here.” Arianna opened a cabinet and handed him two plates. “And the silverware is…in this drawer.”

“Wrong drawer.” He chuckled. “Try the next one. We’ll have a California Merlot with dinner.”

He uncorked a bottle, poured and tasted the wine, and then filled two wineglasses for them.

Meanwhile Arianna set the hot pan on a trivet in the middle of the round table in the dining area.

“To many dinners together.” He raised his glass.

She touched her glass to his. “Shall I serve you?”

“Yes, please.” He didn’t protest at the generous portion she put on his plate. “Delicious,” he said after tasting his food. She hadn’t lied when she assured him her recipes were the best. “Incredibly good. I hope you’ll cook for me every day.”

She beamed. “We have enough food for a week at least, and then I’ll reserve time to cook again.”

Later, he helped himself to a second serving and joked, “I don’t think you’ll have leftovers.”

“That’s because I forgot to tell you to buy salad and dessert. I’ll get them tomorrow.”

He emptied his glass and raised his eyebrows. “No need for dessert. I’m full. I’ll clean up.” They brought the plates to the sink. He rinsed them and placed them in the dishwasher.

“You know it wouldn’t take me two minutes to wash them.”

“I know, but since we have a dishwasher, we’ll use it. All done. Will you have another glass of wine?”

She shook her head. “I’ve had enough alcohol for one night.”

“Then may I say thank you for an amazing dinner?” He pulled her into his arms. “And I want you in my arms.” He kissed her lightly on the lips. “Can we continue where we left off?”

“Yes.” She put her arms around him.

“We’ll celebrate your first night in this place together.”

“Yes, oh yes,” Her eyes shut, and she pressed herself against him.

He kissed her, a scorching kiss that left him shaking, too. Without interrupting their kiss, he scooped her up into his arms and walked into the bedroom area, switching off the lights on his way. He set her on the bed. “We won’t sit outside, but we’ll watch the stars through the bay window.”

She pulled off her shirt, exposing herself to his gaze. “Your turn.” He’d already had a taste of her breasts, a more delectable dessert than he’d tasted in a long time, but he filled his eyes with the sight. “You’re so beautiful, Arianna. A man’s dream.”

“And you? Are you this woman’s dream?” She grabbed his shirt and yanked it over his head, and then smiled, stroking his shoulder.

He grinned. “Glad you like what you see.” He removed the bedspread, pushed her down, lay next to her, and gathered her into his arms.

Arianna was so happy, she thought she would cry. She was lying next to this gorgeous and kind man because they were attracted to each other, and he’d treated her like a cherished lover—not like a homeless creature who had to repay a generous gift the only way she could, and certainly not like a slut submitting to a monster out of fear.

Rafael kissed her and caressed her with infinite tenderness, trailing his hot mouth to her cheeks, along her throat, over her chest, waiting for her to respond, to show if she enjoyed his moves.

Boy, did she ever enjoy his hard chest against her breasts, aching for more attention. He unzipped her shorts and lowered both shorts and panties, and she wriggled to get rid of them.

His mouth settled on hers again, as his hands skated over her waist and belly, in fiery paths, his fingers sliding between her thighs, fondling and exciting. Unable to keep quiet, she moaned and screamed. “You, too.” She grabbed his shorts, unzipped them, and he slipped them away.

“Better?” he asked.
