It was only seven forty-five when she checked in at the reception desk of SAMF.

“Rafael said to send you to his office right away. We received a request to bring in a patient from Naples.”

“Okay.” She headed to Rafael’s office. “’Morning. I heard we’re flying to Naples.”

As usual he was in uniform, calm and composed, and ready for any mission. “This is not an emergency. We’re picking up an elderly patient with heart problems and bringing him back to the Cardio Vascular Center. Let’s get your old phone from Carl.”

“Ah.” She’d done her best to avoid thinking of Julio all morning, but Rafael had brought him back on the scene.

“Don’t worry. This is going to be fun.”

“Fun?” She cocked an eyebrow.

“Trust me. You’ll see. We’re leaving in an hour.”

When they entered Carl’s office, his frown was a deep one, filled with concern.

“I don’t have good news,” he stated gravely. “Your stalker jailbroke your phone and installed spyware on it.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means that he regularly checked on your phone and got a log of your calls.”

“A log of my calls?” She tilted her head, blinking.

“Let me explain it better. He hacked your phone to get the numbers you contacted and those who contacted you.”

“Oh my God.”

“He tracked your whereabouts and your contacts.”

“So he knows I work here now?”

“I don’t see any of our company numbers. How did our officers contact you?”

“By emails and texts.”

“He can’t track emails or texts. Only phone calls.”

“Can I see the numbers?” Rafael grabbed the phone from Carl’s hand. “I see my number three times. I don’t see Greg’s number.”

“I only texted and emailed him, never called.”

“Arianna, do you recognize the others?” Carl asked.

“Yes, the building manager’s number, a neighbor’s, two nurses’ and my boss from my previous hospital, a few patients I visited, and Rafael’s three calls.” She sighed. “Where do I stand now? Does he know I work here?”

“Only if he was on his phone tracking your location continuously in the last two days. I assume he had no reason to do it. For the last five years, he must’ve studied your behavior, reassured himself you worked at your hospital, visited a few patients, called the same people, and returned home. A new number may seem suspicious, but you’ve had several new numbers from patients. If they stop after a few times, he wouldn’t worry. Rafael’s number may have alerted him. So I would assume that he would watch for this new number for a few days before searching for its owner.”

“Would it help if I changed number?” Rafael asked.

“No need. Arianna has a new phone now. I left her old phone shut down for twenty hours. Where are you flying to today?”

“Naples.”

“Take the phone with you. Turn it on as soon as you land. Make a few calls to any one or any place—restaurants, hospitals, or hotels. Let him assume you’re there looking for places to stay and work. Then turn it off before you leave and keep it off until the next trip.”

“Thanks, Carl. We’d better go now.”
