She snorted. “As if I’d believe theI love youwords, the crazy promises, and the sex-driven hypocrisy.”

Her bitter words and crisp timber must have stunned him. His eyebrows quirked. “Why such disillusionment? How many men had disappointed you?”

“A couple of tough ones have taught me some useful lessons. Now, I live day by day and appreciate the special joys—you at my side for example.” She moistened her lips nervously. “But I don’t expect anything.”

“Exactly, we’ll take it one day at a time, and make the best of it.”

Despite her mangled emotions, she mustered a smile, but she wasn’t naïve enough to believe life would be always rosy.

Maybe one day her treacherous fate would take a bad turn, and she would fall on her face again, as had happened every time she’d thought she’d gotten rid of Julio only to see him reappearing at the least expected moment.

Eyes narrowed, she pledged that the next time he crossed her path would be their last encounter. She would kill him, or he might kill her. One way or another, it would end.
