His lips puckered with annoyance. “You’ve really changed,” he muttered, his vexation evident.

“Unfortunately, you haven’t.”

Her condescending tone must have grated on his nerves.

He snapped, “Don’t forget I just saved a baby you seem fond of.”

“Come on, Cody. Let’s not mix our past with business.” His eyes narrowed at her rebuke.

She hastened to soften the bitter pill. “I trust you and your father as conscientious doctors. You did an excellent job as usual. If you’re reluctant to continue the treatment, I can search for another doctor. The baby is covered by Medicaid.”

“Don’t be silly. She’s my case.”

She chuckled. “I knew you would say that, Dr. Mason.”

He met her gaze and slowly smiled. “Okay, we won’t mention the past, since you don’t like it. Will you come tomorrow to spend time with the baby?”

“I plan to. Will I be able to hold her?”

“If she remains stable and doesn’t develop complications, holding her would help her heal faster.”

“I’ll be here in the afternoon.” She flashed a radiant smile, knowing she could rebuke him any time, and maybe learn to forgive him—providing he behaved.

They found Rafael pacing along the hallway in front of Dr. Mason’s office. He came over to her. “How’s the baby?” His gaze searched her face, anxiously reading her expression.

“She’ll be fine. She’s in good hands, under Dr. Cody Mason’s care. See you tomorrow, Cody.” She stopped by Dr. Mason and waved her goodbyes from the door, “Bye, Dr. Mason,” then faced Rafael. “Let’s go home.” Back straight, chin high, she strode away with the man who cared about her.

The past was gone. The present encompassed Rafael, a great job, and a comfortable apartment. Abuela had often reminded her to look for the silver lining in the dark clouds on the horizon. A picture of Annabelle popped into her mind. Hopefully, the baby would recover and be part of Arianna’s future.
