His words barely registered on her dizzied senses. “Huh... Not sure.”

***

Did she want to make it official?

Arianna thought about the annoying words for part of the night, lying next to Rafael and pretending to sleep, then the next day as she sat in the copter, her gaze riveted on his profile during take-off.

Did he realize that his question sounded like a business proposal? A vague one that could mean a lot or almost nothing.

Officialas in telling their colleagues they were a couple? Which they all knew already.

Officialas in completely moving in together? Which wouldn’t make much difference in their lives.

Orofficialas in getting married?

Disgusted, she snorted. Did he really think she would consider that a marriage proposal? Geez, coming from such a passionate and tender-hearted man, she would’ve expected something more romantic.

How did he expect her to answer?Yes, please marry me,maybe?

She huffed, hoping they wouldn’t have a patient requiring intensive care. Someone up there must’ve heard her prayer. An hour later, they dropped off the elderly lady needing back surgery at the Miami Mercy Hospital.

“Arianna, good to see you,” her friend Claudia greeted her as she walked toward the helipad to receive the patient’s stretcher. “It’s been ages.”

“Good to see you, too. I sent you the patient’s file.”

“Got it. We should get together. Call me when you have time.” Claudia left with the stretcher.

Arianna returned to the copter and climbed in.

She caught Rafael and Leo both studying her with anxious gazes.

“Is everything okay, Arianna?” Leo asked. “You look like you’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders.”

“Not at all. All’s good.”

As usual, Captain Lopez didn’t voice any personal comments during work. By now, she knew he would reserve his questions for when they returned home.

“Are you going to the hospital?” he asked while they rode up together in the elevator.

“Yes. I’ll call the PICU nurse to see if Annabelle’s improved.”

“Okay. Let me know.”

The PICU nurse told her Annabelle was still in intensive care because of a slight fever.

“All right. Thank you.”

She called Rafael to tell him. “Fever means infection, which means antibiotics, which translates to at least one or two more days in PICU. I’m going right away. I won’t stay long.”

“I’m coming with you.”

“You can’t enter the unit.”

“I know, but I can drive you and wait in the cafeteria. Stop by my condo when you’re ready.”

“Okay. Thanks.”

He knew she was anxious and wanted to keep her company. Wasn’t that a sign of love?
