“Right, but they’re the best in their field. Cody performed the baby’s surgery.”

“Is he as gorgeous now as he was when we were in nursing school?”

“Even more, and way nicer now, too.” An idea popped into her mind as she looked at her blonde and sassy friend who seemed in need of a loving Mr. Right. “He’s a big shot at the Bay Health Center, unattached and available. Dedicated to his patients, and in my opinion, in need of a woman who would understand a doctor’s passion for his field.”

“How come you didn’t hook up with him yourself?”

“Why would I? I have Rafael. I don’t need or want anyone else.”

“Ah, makes sense. Can you do a friend a favor?”

“I sure can. But you know how it goes. You scratch my back. I scratch yours.”

“What do you need?”

Arianna explained the situation. “Annabelle needs babysitting from eight to three every day. Sometimes until five. I’m ready to pay generously.”

“I wish I could do it. She’s so cute.”

Arianna’s heart plummeted. “You can’t? Bummer.”

“But I know the perfect person for the job. My friend SueAnn’s mom. The poor woman lost her husband a few months ago and is in bad shape financially. She would love to take care of a baby and make some money. Let me give her a call.”

Arianna crossed her fingers, praying.

“She’s ready to start anytime. Here, talk to Nancy Gordon.”

Arianna chatted with Nancy and heaved a sigh of relief. “She’ll come by to see us tomorrow. My last day at home.”

“Okay, my turn. When will you introduce me to Cody?”

“Tomorrow afternoon, if you come with me to his office. Annabelle has a post-surgery appointment. Short dress, high-heel sandals.”

“I’ll let my hair curl down my back.”

Arianna patted her shoulder. “Your hair is always great, Claudia.”

After lunch, Arianna prepared the Cappuccino and brought out dessert. They were like two schoolgirls planning their prom. “I’ll pick you up tomorrow at one-thirty,” Claudia offered while hugging Annabelle. “Thanks, girl. You made my day.”

And maybe her life, if she played her cards right.

Cody was lonely and desperate for an understanding companion. A lovely nurse like Claudia would look great at his side.

That evening, Rafael returned in a lousy mood. “Barbara’s impossible. How can I work with a flight nurse who shuts her eyes during the takeoff and landing?” He narrowed his eyes on Arianna. “When are you going to look for a babysitter?”

“I did, and I found one. She’s coming tomorrow to meet me and get acquainted with Annabelle.”

“Seriously?” His grouchy frown melted on the spot.

Arianna nodded. “I have great hopes that things will work out.”

“Thank you, babe.” He kissed her, despite the baby’s fretting and squealing. “Okay, your turn, sweetie-pie.” Annabelle raised her arms. “How can I resist?” He picked her up and hugged her.

“Rafael, do you think they can take her away from us? I mean not now, but someday when her father’s out of jail.”

“I hope not, but anything is possible. We’ll deal with it when the time comes—if it does.”

During dinner, Arianna sat the baby in her swing next to them.
