“Royce, are you still here?”

“Yes. Where are we going?”

“To my house. Where else?”

“Your mother and Dean Tristan are there?”

“No, they’re out. He just picked her up to go to dinner and then the opera. I’m on my own and very lonely. I miss you.”

“Me, too.”

“See you soon.”

“Sure.”

He shut his phone and stared at it. Susan would pick him up in fifteen or twenty minutes.

Dashing to the bathroom, he turned on the shower, shed his clothes, and let the water flow over his body. Finished, he turned off the taps, dried himself, and dressed. Two minutes later, he was ready to go, his leather jacket on his shoulders, wallet, phone, and keys in his pocket, and more importantly, clear-headed.

What had prompted Susan’s change of heart?

Enjoying the brisk October air, he strolled to the gate of the complex and waited there. He raised a thumb at the SUV slowing down, and climbed in as soon as it stopped.

She smiled.

His heart swelled and his head swirled with joy. “You look lovely.”

She wore a short white dress, exposing a good deal of thigh and leg flesh to his hungry eyes, and her hair cascaded down her back. To his delight, the heavy gold necklace was nowhere to be seen.

“I’ve missed you.”

“I’ve missed you too, Royce.”

“Where’s your engagement necklace?”

“I took it off. It was strangling me.”

“Ah.” She’d finally come to her senses and decided to ignore the man who didn’t deserve her. “Let me drive. I’ll take you to a nice little pub in Mount Adam.”

“All right.”

She stopped the car on a side street.

Royce jumped out, circled around to her side, and opened her door to take her into his arms. He crushed her mouth under a scorching kiss.

“My sweet Susan. I’ve missed you so much.”

He helped her into the passenger seat, sat at the wheel, and took off.

“How come you called tonight after such a long silence?”

“I was so confused about you, about Kasem, about my own feelings, wondering what was right or wrong.”

Determined to put his cards on the table, he pierced her with a narrowed glance.

“You didn’t believe me when I said and swore I didn’t flirt with any woman at the bar.”

“I was wrong not to believe you. In my heart, I knew you’d always rushed to my side and wouldn’t betray me. I’m sorry I let Kasem’s email sway my faith in you.”
