Zoey: Okay, I seriously have to keep working on edits, but let’s tell them yes. I love you, talk later.
Me: Love you too, babe.
I go back to my conversation with Mikey.
Me: Sure. Anyone else joining us?
Mikey: Trishy, obviously.
I roll my eyes and shake my head. But, hell, at least we can have fun with this.
Me: Need me to bring anything?
Mikey: Nope. Well, I’ll never argue with good beer. Otherwise, I’m all good. Eating at 6, be here before that.
Me: Aye, aye, Captain.
Mikey: Fuck off. Later.
I smile to myself. Get to be sneaky with my girl? Get to give my brother shit? Win, win.
Zoey
I’m going to slam my head into the desk.
It’s possible I need a break.
Or some alcohol.
I hate editing.
Well, I hate going through edits. I hate trying to figure out how to reword a sentence that makes perfect sense as is, but I’ve started too many in a row with the same letter.
Grr.
No. I don’t need alcohol—not yet, at least. I need coffee. Lorelai Gilmore levels of coffee.
Hopefully, it will help with this headache I’ve been having too. I hate when it comes and goes for days like this. It drives me nuts.
As I’m about to get up, my phone rings.Tad. Urgh. I resist the urge to decline the call, since I need to talk to him, anyway.
Steeling myself for whatever bullshit is to come, I grab the phone and answer.
“Hello,” I say in my calmest voice.
“Hey. Can you pick the boys up from school today?”
I groan and look down at my desk calendar like I don’t know what it’s going to tell me. I have a video conference with my agent, editor, and several people from the publishing company about blurbs, covers, etcetera, etcetera.
“Uh, no. I can’t. Why can’t you?”
He grumbles, and I hear furious tapping on a keyboard in the background. “I got pulled into this high-level meeting because some accountant doesn’t know how to do his job correctly.” He grumbles something else, then annoyedly asks, “You really can’t get them?”
“No. I have a meeting with multiple people about things for my next book and—”
He scoffs like the utter jackass he is.
“Can’t you just reschedule that?”
