“Why?”

“I had to talk to him about a couple of things and he—was such a dick.”

“Listen, if you need that taken care of, I know a guy with a lot of land who owes me multiple favors. They’d never find his body.”

I roll my eyes as I smile. “You and your brother, always making threats you don’t keep. Speaking of, I hear he’ll be joining us for dinner tonight. Funny, Trishy didn’t mention that when she texted earlier.”

He clears his throat. “It was a recent addition. How’d you know?”

“We talk, Mikey. We’re…close.”Well, it’s not a lie.

“Right, so, the boys?”

“Just bring them back to your place. He’ll come pick them up after his meeting.”

“Perfect. They can test out the new gaming setup I have in the basement.”

I smile at that. “You spoil them.”

“They’re my nephews—for all intents and purposes—I love them, even if they are—”

“Too smart for their own good?”

“Exactly.”

“All right, well, thank you. I’ll call the school and let them know and I will see you tonight. Love ya, bud.”

“Love ya, Zo. Bye.”

I let out a sigh and quickly call the school, then send Luke a text letting him know the situation and that we have the all clear to tell the boys.

I can’t lie, I’m excited for them to finally know. I’m sure Alex, at least, suspects. They love Luke. They love spending time with him. And the other night, a very tired A.J. told me he likes having Luke around because we feel like a fun family.

My heart starts pounding at the thought. The four of us as a family. And, who knows, maybe more kids in the future.

I feel like I’m finally getting everything I want. It almost scares me. I’ve gotten used to not getting what I wanted or felt like I deserved. I got used to not being loved the way I should have been. It’s scary giving into that love now—the heartstopping, magical, written-in-the-stars kind of love—because if I lost it, I’m pretty sure I’d fall apart.

When I get to Mikey and Trish’s, I’m in a much better mood. I got as many edits done as I could and I’m excited I get to see my boys for a few minutes.

Mikey immediately envelops me in a hug when I walk in the door. Then he pulls away, looking at me with an evil smile on his face.

I narrow my eyes in confusion. “Where are the boys?”

“Downstairs with Trish. Now, I have a question for you.”

“O-kay…”

He dramatically scratches his chin and leans in toward me. “Something interesting happened today when I picked the boys up from school.”

“So far, not a question.”

He continues on as if I never interrupted him. “Alex ran up to me and gave me a big hug. Then he said he was surprised I was the one picking him up. He said he figured it would be Luke.”

Oh boy.

“When I asked him why, he said that you and Luke have been spending a lot of time together lately. When I asked how much, he mentioned that Luke stays until after they go to bed every night and then comes back first thing in the morning.”

Shit.
