God, grant me the strength of character not to throw her out of this building on her pregnant ass.

“Well, we’ve caught up. Unless you have any other enthralling news, there’s the door.”

She walks over, still stroking her bump, and says, “I hope you find the same happiness I have.”

My eyes inadvertently drop to the picture on my desk of Zoey and the boys. It used to hang on the nearby wall with other pictures of friends and family, but I moved it to my desk as soon as we started dating. The three of them are my heart.

“Oh,” she coos, “isn’t that precious. You’re playing house with Zoey.”

“I’m in a serious relationship with her, yes.”

She steps in even closer and whispers, “Does she know? Have you told her everything you can’t give her?”

I don’t let her see it. I keep my exterior calm. But inside, my heart sinks. Because Zoeydoesn’tknow. We’ve talked about it on and off. She’s mentioned having more kids. She doesn’t know the answer to that question is that we can’t. I know there are other options, but knowing that we can’t create a child together… it destroys me.

“You don’t need to worry about my relationship with Zoey. What you do need to do is get the hell out of my office and my business right now. And if you ever come back here again, I swear to God, I’ll file a restraining order against you. We’re done. We have been for a long time, so stay out of my life, and go live yours.”

She glares at me. Then she smiles her most evil smile. “So, she doesn’t know. Good luck with that.”

Then she walks out of my office, leaving me pissed off and heartbroken. Zoey is the best thing that has ever happened to me. She and the boys mean everything to me. I don’t want to lose her. I want to believe we’re strong enough, but… well, fuck. It doesn’t make me feel particularly manly to admit it, but I’m afraid. I’m afraid of losing her and the boys. And if I did, I’m afraid I’d never be able to recover.

I slam my hand against my desk, then sweep it across, sending the mug of pens and several other breakable things smashing to the floor.

Cece plows through the door. “Are you okay?” Her eyes move wildly around the room. “What happened?”

“Tara was just here. You didn’t see her?”

“No, I just got back. But… shit, I thought I passed her on the road before the parking lot. Fuck. Why was she here?”

“To rub in my face—”

“What?”

“Nothing. It doesn’t matter. But make sure Caroline knows never to fucking let her in the building again.”

“Of course.”

When she doesn’t move, I look at her and snap, “Do you need something?”

“I was coming in to tell you yoursecretclient just pulled in. I imagine they’re already in the room at this point.” She walks over and throws her arms around me. “Go in that room and focus on the thing you love,” Cece whispers. Then she lets me go and walks out.

I take the biggest breath I can. Once I start tattooing, I’ll get in the zone and I’ll be fine. I hope. I admit, tattooing doesn’t hold my attention quite as well as it used to since I’ve been with Zoey.

Zoey.

She’s the thing I love that I’d like to focus on right now.

I force myself out of my office and head down the hall to where our tattoo rooms are. I see the door to the second room is closed and move toward it. One more deep breath, then I open the door.

Oh, fuck.

I can’t believe this.

I should’ve seen this coming.

“Hey, sexy,” Zoey purrs from the chair.

I lean against the door I’ve just closed and stare at her. “What are you doing here?”
