She doesn’t have to ask me twice. “Fuck yes,” I growl, picking her up and kissing her. “Let’s go home.”

Chapter 11

Zoey

“Remember, nopressure,”Isay softly as I set not one but two pregnancy tests upside down on the counter. I don’t even want to be tempted to look.

Luke smooths his hands down my arms. “I’m sorry about earlier. No matter what the answer, it’s all going to be okay.”

Tears prickle in my eyes. “I know it’s just… even if I am, that’s not a guarantee.” His brow furrows in confusion. “You didn’t tell me the depth of everything with Tara. I didn’t tell you…”

“What?”

“I’ve had three miscarriages.”

He pulls me tight to him, wrapping me in his strong arms. “I’m so sorry, Zo.”

I pull away and wipe a tear from my cheek. “It was hard, especially because I was dealing with it completely alone.”

“How so?”

I huff out a sigh. “Tad told me it wasn’t a big deal, they happen to lots of people, and I shouldn’t mourn a baby who obviously wasn’t meant to live.”

Luke’s fists clench. “Fucking jackass,” he growls. “I understand why you didn’t tell me, but I wish I could’ve supported you through it.”

“You actually did for one of them.”

“I did? When was that?”

“I doubt you’d even remember. It was before Alex, so ten years ago, at least.”

“I think I remember every moment with you, babe.”

“It was a day after I’d started bleeding from the miscarriage, and I needed a distraction, so I went to Target and started wandering. The only problem was, I forgot about the baby section. I just shattered. I ran out of the store crying and that’s when I ran smack into your chest in the parking lot.”

He looks at me like he’s looking into my soul, eyes filled with sincerity and love. “I remember. I was ready to go find someone and kill them for you if I needed to. You wouldn’t tell me why you were crying—”

“And you wouldn’t let me leave.”

His jaw twitches, and I know he’s fighting a smile. “Hell no. So, I took you to Friendly’s, and you ordered your favorite sandwich, and then I got you a—”

“Cone Head Sundae,” I say at the same time. “That day meant a lot to me.”

“Well, if I’d known, I’d have stayed with you longer.”

“It’s probably best that you didn’t. If I’d been that vulnerable with you, I probably would’ve cheated on Tad.”

He growls and steps toward me, pulling me to his lips, and sweeping his tongue into my mouth.

Our steamy makeout session is interrupted by the timer going off. I step back and look at him. “Ready?”

His hand slides into mine and gives it a tight squeeze. “For whatever it says.”

I grab them both and flip them over, and while I’m not surprised, it’s clear Luke didn’t completely believe me. One “pregnant” and one very dark plus sign.

I look up at Luke, who has tears streaming down his face. He drops to his knees in front of me, pulling up my shirt and kissing all over my stomach. “I’m sorry I walked off.”Kiss.“I’m sorry.”Kiss. “I love you.”Kiss. “I love you.”Kiss.“I love you.”

I gently run my fingers through his hair as all the emotions hit me at once. I’m actually pregnant. With Luke’s baby.Holy shit. After all those years, I wondered if we’d ever become something more. I wished for it, dreamed of it, struggled to believe in it. But here we are. I don’t know what’s going to happen. But I do know that no matter what, we’re going to be okay. I can feel it in my bones. It’s all going to be okay.
