I can’t help but laugh at the look on her face. I can tell part of her wants to fight me on that, but the other part knows all too well that I’m right.

Zoey has a scathing quick wit. She’s quiet and reserved so you never see it coming which makes it all the more deadly when she hits you with it.

We ride in silence for a while, which I hate. I love hearing her voice, getting her talking. “Hey, after lunch, we’ll drop your car at Mikey’s. Then I can either take you home or…”

“Yeah?”

I shrug. “You can ride along with me today. I’ve got a couple of cars to pick up for Mikey.”

She smiles brightly. “I’d love to ride along with you. That sounds like fun.” Her eyes dance with mischief. “Plus, might give me inspiration for a new story. The hot tattooed tow truck driver.” A smirk twitches on my lips as she realizes what she said. Her cheeks turn pink as she clears her throat and tucks a few tendrils of her hair behind her ear. “I mean, uh, romance readers like tattooed guys.”

Oh, there’s no way I’m letting her off that easy.

I slide my hand down her thigh, and she whips her head to look at me.

“And do you like tattooed guys?”

She stares at me for a minute, swallows hard, but never breaks eye contact with me. “Sometimes.”

I smile and give her thigh a squeeze.

She looks out the window, and I press down a smile, reveling in the fact that I clearly have an effect on her.

Chapter 2

Zoey

Lukeiskilling me. Why does he have to be so freaking sexy? It does not help that I’ve had a thing for himforever.

Okay, maybe not forever, but for a pretty long time. It started out as a crush in high school. He was older, brooding, and into art. We could sit in the library for hours, me scribbling away in a notebook while he drew. I loved it. I fantasized about him and wondered if he felt the same way about me, but he never ended up making a move. I was a little too chicken. Maybe if he hadn’t been Mikey’s older brother, I would have. I never wanted to risk making things awkward if he didn’t feel that way about me.

Then I went away to college and met Tad. I look back and wonder what I saw in him. He was sexy, flirty, and seemed to have a charming asshole personality. Over eight years of marriage, I learned he wasnota charming asshole. He was a smarmy asshat.Whatever.Live and learn, right?

But Luke… the crush I had in high school grew without me realizing. By the time I moved back here after college, Iwantedhim. Despite the fact that we were both engaged to other people. I did my best to push it away. It was easier once I had the boys, since my focus was always on them. But as my marriage crumbled, I found myself thinking of him more frequently. Since my divorce, it’s nearly constant.

My stomach flutters thinking of all I’ve gone through this last year and every moment I spent with Luke. We’re the closest we’ve ever been and every day I spend with him makes me hotter for him than the last. Seriously, I’ve had to keep my battery-powered friend on standby because by the end of a day spent with Luke, I’m hot and bothered and oh-so-wet.

Today is no exception.

Especially as his hand brushes mine as we both reach for the lever to lower the back of the tow truck. Electricity shoots through me. I turn to look at him and see him already looking at me. My heartbeat quickens, and I wonder if we’re about to kiss. We’re staring at each other, breathing heavily. If anyone saw us right now, they’d think we were absolute idiots.

“Hey, guys.”

I jump and practically leap away from Luke at the sound of Mikey’s voice.

Luke clears his throat as Mikey looks between us, stifling a laugh.

Okay, maybe weareidiots.

Make that definitely.

“What are you guys up to?”

“Just dropping off the last car, bro. Then I was gonna give Zoey a ride home.”

“You’ll have my car for me tomorrow, right?” I ask Mikey.

“Yes. I will get you your precious new car tomorrow.”
