“I see that you finally got her name right,” Daphne muttered.

Phineas stopped in front of her. “Sarah told me what you said, and now she wants nothing to do with me.”

“I believe I did you a favor.”

“In what way?”

“Sarah naïvely thought you cared for her.”

“I did care for her!” he exclaimed.

She arched an eyebrow. “I thought you told her that there could be no future between you two.”

“I did, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care for her.”

“What is it that you want, Cousin?” Daphne asked.

Phineas tossed his hands up in the air. “For you to stay out of my business.”

“Was I supposed to ignore Sarah while she was crying over you?”

“Women cry, it is just a natural progression of things.”

“I couldn’t stand back and let Sarah have false hope when it came to you,” she said, lowering her voice. “She was under the impression that she could become your mistress.”

“That was foolishness on her part,” Phineas said. “She is just a maid.”

“Precisely my point.”

“But that doesn’t mean that I can’t be the one to comfort her.”

Daphne shook her head. “You can’t just toy with her heart.”

“I’m not.”

“Then what are you doing?”

Phineas spun around and walked to the mantel over the fireplace. “I suppose it was nice to feel wanted for once.”

“In what way?”

“Sarah looked at me with admiration,” he said. “I haven’t had that for quite some time.”

“Through no fault but your own.”

“I know, but it was a nice change of pace.”

“You can’t keep leading Sarah on.”

Phineas placed his hands on the mantel and leaned in. “Perhaps I could take Sarah to work at my estate.”

“That would be terribly unfair of you.”

“I contend that is not true.”

“What would you do when she started increasing?”

Phineas paused. “I would have no choice but to dismiss her.”
