“I am,” the man confirmed.
“Would you ever be compensated enough to be able to live with the fact that you took someone’s life?”
“You do not need to concern yourself with that,” the man growled.
Guy gave him a pointed look. “If you tell me who hired you, I will pay you double.”
“That information is not for sale.”
“That is a shame, because we could go on with our lives and pretend that this never happened.”
The man removed his pistol and held it up. “You are being rather arrogant for a man who isn’t armed.”
“I don’t need a pistol to defend myself.”
The man chuckled dryly. “I disagree.”
With a sudden motion, Guy grabbed the barrel with one hand and twisted the man’s wrist with his other, forcing him to release his hold on the pistol.
Guy pointed the pistol at the man. “If you would prefer, we could try it your way,” he said. “Who hired you?”
Fear crept into the man’s eyes. “I can’t say.”
“Why not?”
“He will kill me.”
“Aren’t you worried that I may kill you?”
The man pursed his lips. “The truth is, I don’t know who hired me,” he admitted.
“How is that possible?”
“I do odd jobs for this person, but I have never met him,” the man explained. “Whoever it is leaves me a note informing me of the price for the job.”
“How much are you being paid to threaten me?”
“Five pounds.”
“And if you are forced to kill me?”
The man shifted uncomfortably in his stance. “Fifteen pounds.”
“I see,” Guy snorted. “That is rather a small sum to take someone’s life.”
“I am no murderer,” the man declared. “Although, I did not have a problem with threatening you or roughing you up a bit.”
Guy smirked. “I take it this is not going according to plan for you.”
“No, it is not.”
Guy shifted his hold on the pistol and extended it towards the man. “You can have your pistol back.”
The man’s brow lifted as he hesitantly accepted it. “You are giving it back to me?”
“Pistols are expensive, and I don’t dare deprive you of one.”
“Even after I threatened you with it?” the man asked in disbelief.
