She gazed at it and turned and walked out the door. Gilbert looked apologetic, then followed, just as Jake stepped inside.

He closed the door behind him. "It's always a good day when you get a visit from the po-po."

I sank back into my chair and snorted. "Waste of fucking time." I told him about the conversation. "Can you believe they actually thought I would try to blow myself up?"

Jake chuckled and shook his head. He pulled a lollipop out of his pocket, then apparently thought twice and put it back.

"Did you enlighten them?"

"What would be the point?" I asked. "Gilbert was only here to get his cock sucked. Or because Singh made him come. She was only here to further her career. You know the type. She sniffs around until she finds something on me, just so she can collect the accolade for bringing me down." She wasn't the first. She would be the last. They were an annoyance, but little more than that. She would disappear if she became a problem. Gilbert could be bribed or blackmailed. I would prefer to deal with two of him than one of her any day.

"Do you want her dead?" Jake asked lightly.

I rubbed my forehead. A headache was starting to threaten my temples. "No. If she disappears now it will be too obvious. Even an—"

My head jerked up. "Shit. Have someone keep an eye on her. This is exactly the kind of crap Dagen will be looking out for. She dies, it gets pinned on me. I don't need that kind of bullshit right now." Or ever.

Jake nodded then rose and came around behind me. He placed his hands on my shoulders and started to massage them.

"You know they would never make it stick."

"I know, but I don't need the publicity. It's bad for business." And I didn't want to be locked away in a cell for any length of time.

I closed my eyes and enjoyed the feeling of his hands smoothing out my knotted muscles.

"Maybe it would be easier to kill her on our terms," Jake said. "We can make it look like an accident. Dagen will make it look like the murder it really is."

"I'm not sure if you're saying that because it's a good point, or just because you would like to kill someone," I said.

He chuckled. "A bit of both? If she is going to create trouble for you, then it will be a pleasure. And if Alistair Dagen is going to use her to create even more trouble, then even better."

"Unless this is exactly what he wants us to do," I said. "In which case he'll make sure someone sees the accident. Fuck." My headache was getting worse.

"He's getting very good at getting into your head," Jake said. "You should start charging him rent."

"Oh, I am," I replied. "It accumulates every time I think about him. As it stands, his great-great grandchildren will inherit the debt." I grimaced at the idea of him reproducing. I didn't doubt he had, but he was smart enough to keep that information from me.

The door opened and closed. I opened my eyes long enough to see Cooper enter and flop down in a chair.

"I saw the cops outside just now." His ridiculously gorgeous face creased in a frown. "They asked about my uncle. I told them he was out of the country for work, but I don't think they bought it."

"Fucking hells," I muttered. "You better make her and Gilbert have a nasty accident. And figure out who at the station is letting them sniff around. I pay them well enough, I shouldn't have to deal with this."

"My guess is an anonymous tip," Jake said. "I'll talk to our people down there, but you know how it is. Sometimes they have to pretend to look into us."

"It didn't seem like pretend to me," Cooper said. He squirmed in his seat.

"You weren't even there," I pointed out. "Don't worry, we'll deal with it. I've already created a paper trail that will lead straight to Dagen. Our purchase of the garage was totally legal. Dagen's dealing with Silas was not. At least, that's what it will show."

Cooper grinned. "Just when I think you couldn't get more awesome, you get more awesomer."

Jake stopped kneading my shoulders for a moment. "Is that a word?"

"I dunno." Cooper shrugged. "It is now."

"It fits me," I said. "But don't get too excited, you haven't seen how much paperwork you have to fill out to start assassin training."

Cooper's expression dropped. "Really? That much?"
