"I would have followed you," he growled. "Without me, you would have gotten yourself killed by now."

"I would not," I protested. "Give me some credit. I'd last at least a full day out here." Probably a bit more, but I would humour him if it kept him still while I checked his wound. It was healing nicely, but not as nicely as it would have if he'd rested.

I applied some healing salve and gave him an injection of pain relief which would work better on him than good, old fashioned tablets like humans prefer to pop.

Before we left, I'd scoured the medical database for information on Parvoran physiology. I'd downloaded it to a tablet, then to the ship, but I'd read as much as I was able to. I needed as much knowledge in my brain as I could get. If he started to crash, I wouldn't have time to consult a computer.

"Okay, lie back," I said. I plumped his flat pillow a couple of times before he placed his head on it.

"Hey, that's a first," I said.

He eyed me. "What is?"

"You did what I told you to," I said with a grin.

He snorted. "Don't get used to it. You're still a pain in my ass, like all humans."

I sniffed and pretended to be offended. "I'll have you know, us humans are awesome."

He brushed a soft, lightly furred hand over my cheek. "Yes, you are. You and Brinley, at least. The rest I've met, I could live without."

"You say that, until the Gamma saves our asses," I said. "I think you'll be happy to see Captain Marshall then."

"Possibly." He brushed his thumb over my lips.

"You should sleep," I said.

"Only if you lie next to me." He scooted over to the wall.

"There's barely room for two sticks of dried spaghetti," I said. In spite of that, I lay down in the small space left and lay facing him. It was a tight squeeze, but comfortable enough.

He placed a hand on my hip and closed his eyes. For a long time, I watched him sleep, then I drifted off myself.
