"Hello?" I called out.

I waited for the guys to answer. No response came. Not even a smartass remark from Slek. No innuendo, no flirting. Just silence.

"Should we go inside?" Brinley asked.

The security officer held up her hand and waited a moment longer. Before she said a word, a sound came from inside the ship. A shuffle, followed by a groan.

"It sounds like they need help," I said. I wasn't ready to accept it might not be any of the guys. That they might be—

No, they had to be alive. If they weren't, I would find them in whatever came after life and kick their asses.

"Something is coming out," one of the other security officers said.

"Or someone," Brinley said firmly.

A figure appeared in the doorway. He staggered down the gangway, hand pressed to a bandage on his head.

J'avet pressed something into my hand before he collapsed at my feet.
