Rayax rolled back onto his heels. "I have no idea. Perhaps it was done in error? Or simply wasn't thought through."

"If you're trying to save the galaxy from a grave threat, then you think everything through, right to the end," J'avet said coldly. "To. The. End."

Rayax slumped against the wall. "You're right."

"What can you tell us about the engineer on Gamma?" I asked. "They didn't have silver skin, did they?"

"No. She's human, like the captain," Rayax said.

"I hate to say this," I said slowly, "but I don't suppose it's possible someone wants everyone to become hosts, knowing humans can't?" It wouldn't be the first time humans tried to take advantage of a situation so they could take over a country, a city, whatever.

"There's no guarantee humans can't," J'avet said. "Whatever is going on, we'll have to watch our backs. Literally and figuratively." J'avet gave us all a look like he couldn't trust any of us.

After the last few days, that stung. I would have told him to fuck off if we were alone.

"In the meantime, E'rel can analyse the tracker and see if it's programmed to send information to anyone in particular." J'avet turned away and I slouched in my seat.

I wanted to trust all of them, but right now I wasn't sure if I could trust myself. That was the worst part of all. I was on a pod full of people I liked, but I never felt so alone.
