"Edie, move!" he snapped.

I blinked. "Right." I caught his expression as I undid my harness. He still thought I should have stayed back, out of the way, but this time there was something more. Genuine concern for my safety. I wasn't just a pest. I was a pest he cared about. That was a step up.

I think.

I didn't waste time pondering the question, just grabbed my bag and followed the others out into the jungle.

"We're approximately fifty kilometres from the nearest settlement," J'avet said. "We'll need to walk there, as quickly as possible. If they think we're Iri, they may come looking. If they know we aren't, they will come looking. We need to be gone from here before they do."

I scanned the skies above the trees but saw nothing yet.

"J'avet, did I see a river before we stopped?" I asked.

He frowned. "I believe so. Why?"

"We could attach the tracker to a log and float it downstream," I suggested. "If they can detect it, they'll follow that and give us more time."

He grinned. Actually grinned. "Rayax, get the tracker from inside the pod. Carry it until we reach the river. We'll send them on a wild boar chase."

Wild boar? I remembered Slek mentioning something about taking Danec to hunt Parvoran boar. My heart skipped to think they might be on the same planet. If they were, I would find them. We had made it this far more or less uninjured, we could make it the rest of the way.

I hefted my bag onto my back and followed J'avet into the forest.
