"Oops," Zarex whispered in my ear. "I think they know I left."

I smiled. Same old Zarex. It was nice to see his sense of humour was intact.

"I think they want you back," I whispered. That was too damned bad. He was mine and I wasn't going to give him up without a fight.

Zarex squeezed my hand, confirming he was in full agreement. Good. I would hate to waste time arguing over something like that, especially here.

I looked toward J'avet and wished I could see his face. I had no idea what he was thinking. Did I ever? No, but particularly now, with his face covered.

Did we run or stay put? If we ran, which way would we go?

I heard him exhale.

"We'll head underground before they find us here," he said. He sounded so decisive it gave me hope that at least someone here knew what they were doing.

He started back toward the darkened doorway and disappeared from sight.

I gripped Zarex's hand hard and stepped after J'avet. If I was the praying kind, I might ask that we be near our goal. I had about all the excitement I could take for one night. Okay, one lifetime. When this was over, I was going to live the most boring life possible.

Yeah, right, as if the guys would let it be boring. I would settle for safe and calm, with short periods of bungee jumping, or something similar.

Once through the doorway, the visors detected a set of steps. I stopped before I fell down them and into…wherever they led.

The shouts from behind us got louder.

I glanced back. "I think we need to hurry."

"Forward," J'avet said. He took a couple of steps down and I started to follow.

Then the lights came on. They were so bright I cried out before I slammed my eyes shut and tore off my visor.

"Fucking hells," I growled. I forced my eyes back open, whirled around and blinked.

Four Iri stood looking in our direction, eyes glazed, silver skin shining in the light.

My heart leapt.
