Eyes on J'avet, I stepped through.

J'avet stopped.

My heart pounded. I waited for him to turn around and fire, but he didn't. He just… stood.

"J'avet?" I whispered.

I thought I caught the shake of his head, but I could have imagined it because I wanted to see something. Anything.

The room we stood in was cold and as dark as the rest. They really didn't do ‘hospitable’ here. I suppose it's true what they say; it's all about location, location, location.

"It could use a coat of paint and some comfy furniture," I remarked.

Danec was unmoved. At least he wasn't pissed off. Not that I could tell, anyway.

Yet.

"It is a little empty," Zarex agreed.

"Now you mention it, it is," Tarvun agreed. "Are we waiting for something?"

"Or someone?" Zarex added.

J'avet's mouth was set in a line. Was that it? He was waiting to see what might happen?

Honestly, I wasn't a fan of playing the wait and see game, but he was the one in charge. If he knew what he was doing, then I would go along with it. What choice did I have? Okay, a few, but I would still follow his lead for now.

Footsteps approached from the direction we'd come. The sound of booted feet on the stairs, moving closer. They reached the bottom of the stairs and started down the corridor.

My hands sweated. I gave J'avet a scared look, silently begging him to know what he was doing. If he didn't, we were fucked. We'd be dead before the IF attacked the planet. I didn't want to die in a hole in the ground. That would suck.

My heart sank when familiar faces appeared in the doorway and stepped through.

Brinley, E'rel, Hamit and Navor. They all looked tired, but in good spirits.

I frowned. Better spirits than they probably should be, considering they were prisoners of—

I gaped.

"Slek?" I send another thanks to the various deities of the universe that he too was alive. His skin was silver, but he was alive.

Shit.

I guess it was only a matter of time before the Iri made him one of them. Only—

There was something about him that didn't seem quite the same as the rest of them.

His eyes.

He looked in my direction and I saw recognition in them.

My heart leapt. I almost took a step forward, but J'avet hissed, "Don't move."

I opened my mouth to argue, but the firmness in his eyes made me close it again and stop.

To Brinley, J'avet said, "You were supposed to find a way out of here."

She smiled ruefully. "We tried, but we got a bit sidetracked by this Iri guy. He insisted we come down here." She jerked her head toward Slek.
