"Faster," J'avet snapped. "They'll bring this place down around us."

"Almost there," Slek said. "It's a complicated algorithm, but I see what he's doing."

"No, not that," E'rel said.

I was curious what he was referring to, but too busy shooting at Iri to stop and look.

"Take that," I said as I got one in the chest. "And that. I wish we had more devices." I aimed at an Iri woman, but my device clicked and nothing happened. "I'm out of juice."

"So am I," Navor said. He switched to his disconnector, so I did the same.

It slowed down the first few Iri, but their numbers seemed to grow, rather than die down. They must be pouring down the stairs. That would have to stop soon, right?

"Are we there yet?" I asked in my best exhausted, fed up voice.

"In five," Slek said.

"Four."

"Three."

"Two."

"One."

I waited.

The Iri kept on coming.

"Slek?"

"Sorry, now it's one," he replied.

A second later, every Iri in the room stopped dead. The nanobots went still.

I held my breath.

Let it out.

An eerie silence fell over the room until it was broken by the groans of Freytauri as the bots fell dead on the floor. Hundreds, thousands.

In moments the floor resembled a shining beach, covered in black sand. It crunched with every step anyone took.

I sagged and lowered my devices.

"As far as I can work out, that will have deactivated every bot in the galaxy," Slek stated.

"Thank you to whoever put in a kill switch," I said. They must have realised the bots might get out of hand. I wasn't sure Yinika realised the extent of the trouble they would cause.

But then again, I wasn't sure she was in control. The bots inside her must have found a way to use her to do their work. She might have been as innocent as the Iri.

It didn't matter now, I supposed, she was as dead as the bots.

"Everyone take a few minutes to rest," J'avet said. "We'll need it to get everyone out of here."

Everyone was also going to need a shit load of therapy after this. Especially Danec, who pulled me into his arms and held me like he had no intention of ever letting go.

I wasn't sure I would let him go either, so I was okay with that.
