"I'm Bain." His deep voice was as emotionless as his face.

I cocked my head at him. "Is that your real name?"

He didn't answer. Instead he asked, "Where is Izzy?"

"The chick who's watched me since I left my place this morning?" I asked. He didn't seem surprised I noticed. I didn't care. I wanted him to know I had seen her. "Fucked if I know," I added, shrugging one shoulder.

Bain looked at me like I might have killed her and thrown her body out the tiny sliver of the open window. Yeah, right, like that was possible. The opening was far too narrow to fit a whole person. Bits and pieces, sure, but that was messy and messy wasn't my thing.

"She was here for a while, then she left. That was about an hour ago. Maybe she got off somewhere else."

Bain gave me a sceptical look, which I met unflinchingly.

I would watch him carefully, and not turn my back on him. If he thought for a moment I posed a risk, he would probably slit my throat and leave me beside the tracks for the birds to eat.

Hard pass.

My hand almost twitched near the blade, but I forced myself to keep still. Bain would be looking for signs of aggression. I wouldn't let him see any, at least until it was too late.

If he noticed anything, he gave no sign. Either he didn't, or he had the best godsdamn poker face in the city.

Note to self, don't play strip poker with him, unless you're ready to lose.Which I might be some day.

He turned to a man behind him, who was hidden by the wall until now. "Go and find Izzy," he ordered. Without waiting for a response, he turned back to me.

"Come on. Follow me." He took in my neat outfit and frowned slightly. Did he disapprove? Too fucking bad. I could have worn a cocktail dress, but I didn't own one. I wasn't the feminine kind. Jeans and t-shirts did me fine.

I drew myself a little taller. "Right. After you then." I couldn't have squeezed past him anyway, he was too big.

He nodded and backed out the doorway. "This way."

"Thank you, Bain." I flashed him a smile.

A slight quirk of his eyebrow suggested he was surprised I used his name.

Why wouldn't I? I might need him at some point. Besides, it didn't hurt to be friendly, right? Just because he'd shown no sign of being amicable doesn't mean I shouldn't try. I wouldn't lower my guard, but I might get him to lower his. Yeah, probably not, but it was worth a try.

He nodded, turned sharply and walked away down the short corridor toward the stairs off the train. His scent trailed after him, leaving behind several drops of power, which dissolved quickly when it mixed with the stale, disgusting carriage smell.

I wrinkled my nose. The dank air suppressed my senses and made my stomach heavy.

I gave myself a shake and picked up my suitcase. I stepped through the door and let it close behind me.

Just before I stepped off the train and onto the brightly illuminated platform, Izzy hurried through the carriage toward me. Her face looked flushed, hair pulled free from her neat plait.

She smiled brightly and spoke with no sincerity at all. "I'm so sorry, I got sidetracked."

I smelled man, and sex, all over her.

"Who were you screwing?" Bain asked bluntly.

Izzy's face flushed pink. "No one. Just some guy." She shrugged, unapologetic.

Bain nodded. "I see."

I suspect she might get into trouble later for not keeping a closer eye on me. I put that in the 'not my problem' basket and moved on. Although, I admit I was a little envious. I didn't need the distraction right now, but I hadn't had a good fuck in… Too damn long.

"Maybe you can keep an eye on our guest?" Bain suggested. He directed a vague wave toward me.
