"Just the Alpha," Dex said. "And anyone he told. What about the Council?"

I shrugged. "Possibly."

Bain frowned. "If the Council knew, they'd find a way to exploit it."

"So no," Kerina said. "No witch is dumb enough to put someone like her into shifter hands."

Bain's frown deepened, either at her blatant bigotry, or because she was right.

"I agree with Kerina," I said. If the Covener thought I could be used as a weapon, why send me here? Unless he wanted me to help kill a few shifters. Mission accomplished if so.

"Not about witches being dumb," I added. "If they could use me, they would."

"They did," Dex said. "They couldn't have realised what they had." He gave me a hungry look that suggested he did. And now he did, he wasn't going to let me go without a fight. I wouldn't kill for him, no matter what he thought. No way. I wasn't a killer, I was just an ordinary, okay, more than ordinary, woman with powers. The fury rose again.

I wanted to pick up Dex and hurl him against a wall. At the same time, I wanted him to fuck me and tell me he wouldn't let anyone exploit me, even him. I wanted to—

I sucked in a breath and suppressed the overwhelming, conflicting emotions. Killing Dex would result in death and considerable regret. I don't know what might come of screwing him. Or Bain for that matter.

"We need to make sure they don't find out," Bain said evenly. "Witches or northerners."

Dex nodded. "You're right," he said. "We should have anticipated the attack on Urla and kept Viva away from it."

Kerina propped her booted foot on a spare chair. "They've been here for a year, and most of us would vouch for them. We couldn't have anticipated. Slade, the Watcher, is more than capable of biding his time."

"Apart from Izzy, you didn't hear anything about any trouble brewing?" Dex asked, the question aimed at both guards.

Bain shook his head slowly. "No, they acted quietly. Izzy should have given us a clue, but people like her pop up from time to time. We couldn't have known they planned anything more, just based on her presence."

"Is it possible this Slade is working with the Council?" I asked. "Or doesn't like that you are?"

"She makes a good point," Kerina said. "I wouldn't put it past the Council to work both sides. I also wouldn't rule out the possibility Lewis and Gordon were loyal until recently. If you offer someone enough money, they'll do just about anything."

"Including you?" Dex asked, an eyebrow raised.

"Great Hades no," Kerina replied. "I like my job. What would I do with a pile of money anyway?"

"Buy a small kingdom?" Dex suggested.

Kerina snorted. "I'm no queen."

Bain's mouth quirked upward slightly. "That's true."

She flipped him the finger and grinned. "Is your pubic unicorn getting cold yet?"

Pubic unicorn?I snorted.

Bain glanced down at his bare legs. "I should probably put on some pants."

Personally, I think he should have taken off the shirt and paraded around naked for a while longer. Maybe long enough to bend me over a chair and—

"Yes, get some pants," Dex agreed. "After that, you and Kerina go out to the city and ask around. See if you can find a suspicious looking woman dressed all in black."

Bain

"How does she do it?"Kerina took a bite of her apple and tossed the core into the water beside the dock. A dozen brightly coloured fish darted forward to fight over it.
