For the first time today, I smile.

Fumbling with my EarPods, I quickly connect the call, and the screen lights up with Marcus, Shaun, Garrett and Simon’s smiling faces.

“Hey, Kitten. Just checking in before your visit.” Shaun grins, looking relieved to see me.

“Nawwww, thanks, guys.” I grin, trying to keep my voice low, so I don’t draw too much attention from the other bus travellers.

“Did you get much sleep, baby?” Garrett asks, and I shake my head.

“Nope. I’ll sleep tonight.”

“You’re still coming here tonight, right?” Simon asks, practically pushing the other guys out of the way, so his hazel eyes fill my screen.

“Of course I am. I’m gonna need you tonight, Sy. I’m gonna need all of you.”

It’s true. I really will need them tonight. Last time I visited Allansdale Prison, I turned up at the Feast night uninvited with no mask. It was a huge mistake. Reckless. If I’m going to be like that again, I need to make sure I’m around people I trust. And I trust those guys more than any other people on this earth.

“We’ll be here waiting for you,” Simon assures me right before Marcus snatches the phone and walks off with his mates complaining in the background.

“Are you ok, Rhee? Like really, ok? Because it’s alright if you’re not. This is big shit what you’re doing today.”

I smile. “I’ll be ok. Hearing your voices and seeing you guys helps. A lot.”

“I wish you had let one of us come with you. It doesn’t seem right for you to do this alone.” His expression turns pained. He really does wear his heart on his sleeve, my Marcus.

“I’m not alone, and I’ll be ok. I’m more worried about how you will get through the day without pulling your hair out.”

He grins at my comment before Shaun snatches the phone back.

“Grady will be fine. Simon will cuddle him for you until you get back. Ok?”

I nod. “Ok, I’ll feel better knowing that.”

He grins and winks, and the slight smile I was wearing falls from my face as I spot Garrett in the background, looking grumpy.

“Ah… Cass.” I whisper, and he leans in.

“What?” He whispers back.

“I mighta’ told Gar a little about going to theHillthe other night.” I know Dana is behind me listening, so I’m trying to be vague. Luckily, Shaun understands. ByHill,I mean visiting Master Hill.

“Yep. He told me. Has lots of questions that I said we will answer tomorrow.”

I nod. Why is everything so fucked up? With Julie and Brian and Master Hill and Tyler, I don’t know how much more I can take.

“Sorry.”

He grins. “He bribed you with his monster cock, didn’t he?”

“Maybe.” I grin and Simon hoots in the background, earning him a punch in the arm from Garrett before Shaun pulls the phone in so close that I can see up his nose.

“We should let you go.” When I nod, he continues. “Remember that I love you, Kitten. We all do. Come home safe, ok?”

My eyes turn glassy as his words soak through that invisible armour I put on earlier, and I realise just how powerful having love in your life makes you. This world can try to beat me down all it wants, but it won’t win. I will keep getting up and fighting back because love is worth fighting for.

The rest of the bus ride is event free. I don’t feel as nervous as I did the last time I came here. I know what to expect now, and I’m prepared.

I follow behind the other passengers that get off the bus, strolling up the path that leads to the Prison’s entrance. There are cars filling the parking lot too, and I see some of the undercover officers get out of different cars.
