“So you wore the wire thing into the prison?” Simon asks this time, and Rhys nods.

“Yeah. They could hear and see everything that happened. Plus, there were a handful of undercover cops that went into the prison with me.” Rhys looks down at the floor then, frowning as she remembers.

“I was alone, though, when I had to go in that room to see Brian. He… ahhh… said something that I kinda hope is a lie.” When she looks up again, her eyes are glassy. “He’s claiming that he’s my biological dad.”

Lexi and Tillie gasp while the rest of us stay silent in shock.

Surely not. Surely, he’s lying.

“He also claims that he had a hand in…” Rhys stops talking, sucking in a breath as she bites the inside of her cheek, working to control her emotions, “He said he killed my mum. Said he made it look like she overdosed when really he was the one that did it.” She frowns, not able to look us in the eye, keeping her eyes trained on the floor. “He said that he and Julie paid off my other foster families to treat me badly so that I’d be taken from their care, and when I was placed with Brian, I was basically easier to groom.”

Fucking hell. I’m about ready to punch anything and everything. If he is who he says he is, then how could he have done that to his own daughter?

"I realised the only way for me to get information about Julie was to pretend that I care about him.” She shivers at a memory and shakes her head. “So I told him that I want to live with Julie so I could be close and visit him more often. I got him to admit that Julie lives somewhere nearby the prison. He also confessed that Julie has been watching me for years. And that she helps runaway girls by taking them in off the streets.”

“Fuck.” Marcus growls.

“Fuck’s right.” Tillie agrees, her pixie face looking flushed in anger.

“He… ahhh… got a bit handsy.”

“What!” I yell at the same time as Marcus, both of us bolting up from our seats.

“It’s fine. I disconnected. I withdrew my mind from the situation, and it was over in a flash because the guards came in and tackled him to the ground. Then an alarm went off, and all the visitors were ushered out of the prison until it was clear for us to go back in and get our belongings.”

“You should never have gone there,” Garrett growls angrily behind Rhys, but she shrugs.

“Maybe, but we needed information, and we got some, so at least it wasn’t a total waste of time.”

“Fuck Rhys. What did the cops say about it?” Lexi asks, sitting forward in her seat, her blue eyes glassy with emotion.

“Well, they could see and hear everything, and so could my parents, and when I left and caught the bus back to the station, there was a whole fucking interrogation to go over everything. I mean, they fucking heard and saw it all. I don’t know why I had to go over it again.”

“Hold up.” Ayden raises his hand. “You caught a bus back to the police station?”

“Oh.” Rhys’ brows lift. “Yeah, in case Julie was watching, we had to maintain our cover. She had to think I went there alone and left alone.”

“Do you think he’s telling the truth?” Bell asks, speaking for the first time, and Rhys shrugs.

“He seemed to know a bit about my past. So maybe.” Rhys shivers then, shaking her head before leaping up from Garrett’s lap.

“End of conversation. Now I need to get shit faced. Can we move on to that part now?”

Everyone stays silent, stunned by what Rhys just told us. It’s so fucked up what she’s had to endure in her life. All because of that Brian fucker. The need to inflict pain and kill is almost overwhelming as my mind flashes with images of that little girl on the video. How could anyone do such heinous things to her?

The volume of the music goes up, and I snap out of my daze to see Rhys swaying her hips as she guzzles down more tequila.

It’s hard to understand how she can switch off her pain like she does and move straight into party mode. There’s no way I could do that.

Is she avoiding? Is she in denial?

Maybe. But if she needs that for tonight, then I’ll fucking make sure she forgets it all.

Rhys

“Soooo… like you’re totally dumping me, aren’t you? I mean, I know I’m not your girlfriend or anything, so it’s probably not even classed as dumping, but you know. You’ve been ghosting me like a total arsehole, and then you sent that message.” I roll my eyes and stumble to the edge, looking at the aqua water sparkle over the light at the bottom of the pool. “We need to talk is code for I’m breaking up with you. I might be young, but I’m not fucking dumb, Ty. I’m just another wet vagina to you, aren’t I? But hell, what a vagina I have. You’ll regret walking away. You know it and your dick knows it. He fucking loves my cunt, Ty. Fucking! Loves! It!” I huff and sink to my arse, nearly tipping towards the pool, but strong arms wrap around me from behind and sink down to the ground with me.
