“Yeah. Close by.” Garrett grunts, standing tall with his arms crossed over his chest and a deadly glare on his face.

“Cool. Same. We’re from Redfield. I haven’t seen you there, though. Are you from Fox Pines or Woodall Ridge?” The stocky guy keeps his focus on Garrett while the others in his group dart their eyes between the rest of us.

“Nah, they ain’t from Woodall Ridge.” The lanky guy at the back of their group offers, “They’re too clean.” The four guys laugh.

“You’re right. They must be from Fox Pines.” The tatted arm guy drags his gaze over me before glancing back at my guys, and a sickening chill runs up my spine.

“They look too preppy to be anything but Catholic students.” The stocky guy eyes each of us. “You from FP Catholic?”

“What of it?” Simon snaps. I can imagine he’s glaring right now. I don’t know for sure since I refuse to take my eyes off these intruders for a second.

“Hey, chill, man. We’re just making conversation.” Tatt guy tuts at us as the stocky guy gets his phone out before holding it up.

“You see this? A friend of a friend sent it to me. It’s a fucking ripper.”

My breath hitches as I see myself as a child on his screen. I feel like I’m in one of those movie scenes where everything zooms in, and all you can see is the video playing and nothing else. I want to react and tell the arsehole to stop, but my words seize in my throat.

“Hey! Turn that off!” Shaun launches forward for the guy’s phone but doesn’t make it far before Garrett wraps his arms around Shaun, holding him back. “You sick fuck! That’s a child!”

“Ooohhh, someone’s a bit touchy. What’s wrong? This your little sister or something?” The stocky guy laughs, and Marcus leaps forward this time, launching his fist into the side of the guy’s face.

Chaos erupts as all the guys lunge at each other while I stay rooted in place for a few very long seconds before my brain catches up. Then, feeling a little more like the old me, the one that is bitch arse crazy, I leap on the stocky guy's back as he pushes Marcus to the ground.

A banshee scream rips from my chest as I hook my arms and legs around the guy's back and bare my teeth right before sinking them into his ear. An odd-sounding wail comes from the stocky guy as he tries to throw me off his back by spinning around over and over. My teeth stay clamped onto him, even when I taste blood, and I dig my fingernails into his shoulders, hoping to inflict more pain.

More yelling echoes around me. I can’t see what’s going on since the guy keeps spinning this way and that in jerky movements. It’s when I hear other female screams that I know cavalry has arrived, and a few spins later and the stocky guy falls forward to his knees.

The ground moves fast towards me, so I squeeze my eyes shut, bracing for impact, yet it doesn’t come. Strong arms wrap around me, pulling me free before I hit the ground, and the next thing I know, I’m being carried away from the melee.

“Calm down, Rhee.” Marcus hisses in my ear as I flail, eager to get back and tear the guy's ear from his head. “Stop, will you!”

His tone sounds more annoyed than anything, so I stop trying to attack thin air and let my limbs drop as I give in to defeat. My feet meet the ground, and I try to look toward the others, but Marcus takes my face in his hands.

“Please tell me that’s his blood and not yours.”

I nod before bringing my arm up and wiping the blood from my lips and chin with the sleeve of my hoodie. Marcus grins.

“You’re crazy. You know that?”

“Yep.” I nod. “You just figuring that out, Grady?”

He shakes his head, not able to hide his smirk. “Nah, I’ve known all along. It’s part of why I love you.”

Did he just say he loves me? Is it really possible that two guys have told me in one night?

“She ok?” Jared asks, jogging up to us before leaning forward to brace his hands on his knees. He’s puffing like he just ran a marathon.

Glancing over his shoulder, I realise that our unwelcome visitors have disappeared.

“She’s fine. Apparently, she’s hungry, though.” Marcus chuckles.

“Cherry, I didn’t know you liked to eat ears.” Simon grins, bounding up to us, all hyped up on adrenalin.

“It’s not exactly the type of flesh I prefer to put in my mouth.” I grin, and Jared rolls his eyes.

“On that note, I’m outta here… again.”
