“Do you think she is a victim?” I asked with a touch of hope.

“I cannot say at the moment. She confuses me,” Aruna admits. “Something has been blocking our vision. We should have felt that attack, but we did not. Not one of us was warned.”

“Rowan is a medium. She could have taken more from you than you thought, Aruna,” I suggested, the thought just suddenly coming to mind.

“Your Majesty, you may be right,” she said.

“Then, that would mean that Rowan had always been part of this movement,” I sighed. “She had only let us glimpse of what she wanted us to see.”

“Young girls can be more cunning than you can ever credit them for, Your Majesty,” Samara said. “But as for me, I am old enough to know where my loyalties should be. I am a Seer, and there are few of us beyond Tarkus. Now, we are fewer still. However, mediums can keep on taking our powers to use them for their own.”

“Mediums cannot hold these powers for long. Can they?” I asked.

“No, they cannot. Some powerful mediums can take and take, but they will destroy themselves. You’ve seen Rowan’s burns,” Samara explained.

“And I healed her. Damn it, I healed that witch,” I bellowed.

“She looks like your sister,” Aruna said softly.

“Well, we need to avenge my father and your Seer sisters, and we are not even sure who our enemies are,” I said.

“They will make themselves known. There is pride in letting people know who you are,” Samara predicted. “I do not think that these assassins will be content hiding in the shadows, unless we call them out as the cowards that they are.”

She was right. Two days later, our enemies attacked, and they were not as disguised as before.
