“You are right, Metheus,” Rowali said. “It is not a war. Nothing has been declared. They just attacked.”

“The more that you should not be part of it,” her brother could not be swayed.

“You all did a good job protecting the palace, with only a few of your men,” Aruna said.

I looked at my husband proudly. Yes, he did a fine job. I knew that he would rather toil in the fields, but he could handle war. I knew it.

“Are you going to be part of the war? The next battle?” asked Aruna, her gaze turned to me.

“Of course,” I said, nodding my head vigorously. “I will be in it.”

In the corner of my eye, I could see Metheus glaring at me. He disapproved. I did not care. I was going to be in the fight. What was I made a remnant of Erishkigal for? What kind of witch and shifter did not use their powers?

“As what?” the Head Seer asked, her eyes probing into me.

“As both witch and shifter,” I said.

“You’ve tried shifting again, have you not?” she asked, revealing how far she could see.

“Yes.”

“So, you truly are Erishkigal’s remnant. You may just be the weapon to defeat the Ninurta,” Aruna muttered, almost to herself.

“She will not fight,” Metheus growled.

“No? Why? Because I am a woman? Did the Seers not fight against the attackers?” I knew of at least one witch who did – Samara.

“You know it is not that,” he said.

“Husband and wife must work together,” Aruna advised. “However, I will leave the two of you to it.”

The Great Hall started clearing up. The servants had cleaned everything that had to be cleaned. Metheus and I had to retire just like the rest.

He was still quiet when we returned to our room. I could see his jaw was clenched. Shadows fell on his face as our only light source was the full moon making itself known through the large, open window.

“You should not have come,” he said.

“Why?”

“You know why. You endanger not only yourself but also Rowali.”

I choked a sob. Of course, he would think that way.

“I only wanted to help.”

I breathed in and out. Deeply. I did not want to become a crying mess. I would listen to Metheus. Perhaps, if I could show him that I had enough self-control, he might just -.

Metheus stopped my thoughts by kissing me on the mouth. I was startled.

“I – I am sorry. I have been trying to stop myself. I am supposed to be mad at you, Luella,” he said.

“Be mad at me, then, but kiss me again,” I breathed, raising my arms to pull him closer for another kiss.

“It’s been a long time,” he complained, his hands pulling at my dress clumsily. Thank goodness for Arrowspear dresses. I pulled the dress above and past my head in one swift motion, leaving me in my underclothes. He watched me with so much desire in his eyes that I felt my cheeks burn.

“I still have my chemise on, Metheus,” I teased.

He responded by removing his tunic and then his breeches. My mouth went dry. Oh yes, he was ready - ready to put his anger aside. I was also ready when he approached and kissed me on my lips. He deepened the kiss, and I sucked on his tongue.
