“Yes. Like the Ninurta. Members of the Touch were obsessed with awakening him, while the others were made to believe that the interest is different – that they were against all those that take energy.”

“So, you think Rowan is used to channel the Ninurta’s powers?”

“Yes!”

“What can we do to fight the void?”

“You need to fight the void with the void.”

“So, it means we need to use your son Metheus to battle the Ninurta? Can they pull from each other?”

“No! My son is strong, but he cannot go against an ancient god with an amplifier! He could die.”

I could feel my mother’s fear coursing through me.

“So, does it mean we need to kill the members of the Touch first?” asked Aruna.

“Yes! But take care. Killing them must be done the right way, or you will release the hungry god to devour everything. You must determine who is taking the reins. Once you know who they are, you can leave them for last. You should attack the Ninurta and its puppet master at the same time.”

Her voice was fainter and fainter as she kept on talking. Meanwhile, I felt strength gathering in my veins as if it connected me to something else of hers. I had become aware that I was a medium like her, but my hands were tingling with something else.

The Touch.

Then, her whole being seemed to collapse, a glow that died down from inside of me. The cold leather of my sandal replaced the feeling of sand under my feet. The floor felt even more solid under it.

I gasped.

“Metheus, you are back!” Luella cried, running to me and cradling my head against her flat belly. “It was so strange hearing your mother’s voice through your mouth. How was it?”

“I believe she may have passed on her Touch to me,” I said, rubbing my cheek on her belly.

“You must battle the void with the void,” Aruna said in a firm, loud voice, bringing me back to our cause.

“Does it mean that I have to battle the Ninurta while the rest battle the puppet master?” I asked.

The Head Seer looked like she was pondering an equation, seeing which element had to go where.

“I wonder what your mother meant by that. I am not sure how it works. If you pull from the void, I -,” she faltered. “I am afraid that it will be stronger than you are.”

I clenched my jaw, disappointed in her answer. However, I knew that she was right. I could not be placed on the other end of the Ninurta equation. Something was missing.

“I agree with you, Aruna. So, our mission right now is to find the puppet master.”

“We may have met this person already, or it could be someone still hidden,” Aruna said.

My wife seemed uncharacteristically silent, but she still held me close to her. I could feel her breath, steady and calm. She had said that I had that effect on her. We had always balanced each other.

With that thought, I suddenly straightened myself on my chair. Luella seemed startled at my sudden movement, but I could not help it. A thought formed in my head. I did not like it, but it just might be the answer to this little riddle that we had been playing with.

I did not like it because it might involve calling on the firebird.
