Meanwhile, the three young men brought turkey and boar to cook over their campsite fire. It was their first real adventure before Metheus started navigating Ruzata. His father thought it a rite of passage but wondered when his son would start bringing women in. Meanwhile, his mother had asked him to ask Ari to come with them. Metheus refused to do it. Still, the scowling prince managed to ask the duke’s heir.

“Would you like to go with us, Ari?”

“I am grateful that you have thought of me, Metheus, but I plan to slip Dorina into my room tonight.”

Metheus shook his head in disbelief. Dorina. The other week it was a Rowena, and then there was -. It did not even make sense to name all the women in Ari’s life.

“Be careful not to get sick,” was all that he said before he left Ari, his thoughts on the whore with sores on her face.

At camp, Emir and Razuku laughed when Metheus told them about Ari.

“Well, while I sometimes like a good woman in my bed, Ari is playing a dangerous game,” Razuku said.

Emir chuckled over his mead. Then, suddenly, Metheus saw a blaze of fiery cloud over Mogochislenia.

“Did you two see that?”

His friends stood up, flanking him on either side. All three gaped at the fiery ball. Soon, the ball disappeared. Extinguished.

“There has been another imbalance in power,” Metheus declared, his jaw clenched. He did not know how yet, but somehow he had a feeling that he would be connected to something brewing in Mogochislenia.

One day.
