Suddenly, I saw Rovali in the corner of my eye. What was she doing there? She did not show any interest in the outdoors. My thirteen-year-old sister loved books more than anything. She had been reading about spirits and mediums. She had started wondering if she could be anything like our departed mother.

“What are you doing here, Rovali?”

“I want to go with you!”

“Well, you know we are not even sure we will go at all. But like with wars, we should always be prepared. If we do have to go, I may have to leave in two days.”

“And?”

“If I have to go, then I will have to get married perhaps a few days after my arrival there.”

“And you will bring the princess here?”

“Yes. I will bring her here,” I assured Rovali. “However, if they decide to cut off the alliances between the two domains, I will remain here with you. I know you would rather have that.”

“Yes, I would rather have that, but now I’ve heard of the princess. I want to see her. I want you to get married, Metheus,” she said in her sweet voice.

“Why would you want me to get married, Rovali?”

“Well, so that you do not have to be that serious all the time.”

I laughed. My sister did not know who I was going to get married to. If I married Princess Luella, I might become so serious all the time, I would grow grey hairs before I even grew old.”

“Metheus!”

“Yes, Father?”

Wonders never ceased. First, it was Rovali walking around the courtyard more often. Then, it was Father out and about again.

“A letter has arrived from Queenspell.”

My heart suddenly pounded. Finally, we would know how to proceed. Even my men looked at my father expectantly. For them, it would be a chance for adventure. For me, it would be so much more than that.
