“Do not fret. We will get there, “ Diana said. “If I can see glimpses of Arrowspear, then we are on our way to recovering our strength.”

“How about you, Father?”

“I am well, but not yet the same. I cannot fill a basin with water, but I have started producing some moisture.” He smiled kindly and nodded at everyone at the table.

“Will that help?”

He shook his head sadly.

“We need to know the Ninurta’s weakness. Find how we can zap its strength because it can gobble everything. It seems it is focused on Prozeus right now. So, it has given us time to re-energize.”

“And Mother?”

“I can only warm things, for now, Luella,” she murmured, looking at her palms in bewilderment. She used to have the healing touch, too. Most of the fire and spirit witches have. I had not tried my own power of healing. I frowned and looked at my palms. Perhaps everyone was right. I was vain and self-centered. All I cared about was that I was thought of as a monster, but I had not attempted to make anyone feel better.

“I can work on the earth,” Marco, Diana's earth warlock husband, volunteered. “I can continue what His Majesty King Metheus has started. He needs to focus his energies on his land and people.”

"I will try to see what balance I can contribute. I am, after all, the only witch at her full power left here in the continent."

My mother's face was disapproving, but she remained quiet. She probably remembered that she had asked me if I had wanted to help Prozeus. She would not back down on her word, even if she was afraid. She was afraid that she would lose me - the only child still living in Queenspell. I was their heiress, but I was also Queen of Prozeus.

Through our conversations that day, I felt the contract unravel. Or was it genuinely falling apart? Tearing. Was it not what I wanted? To feel as if I had something to contribute to the marriage?

There it was – that chance. I would gladly take it. I was not mere cattle to be bartered, but actual power that could be unleashed.
