Lady Adelaide shrugged. “He hasn’t been much trouble despite no one really seeming to like the man very much. It’s a mere minor inconvenience as far as I can tell.”

Connie opened her mouth as though to object but managed to swallow back her thoughts before they came out of her mouth.

“Yes, of course, but do you think there’s a possibility Wagner might be involved in some way with the other situation?”

“I think it’s possible, but I have been forbidden from asking him directly.”

Connie had to laugh. “Would that be your first impulse, then?”

“I’m afraid it might have been. I do like to get straight to the heart of a matter if I can.”

“I can respect that,” Connie said. “But if it was your husband who did the forbidding, I can fully understand why he might have done so.”

Lady Adelaide laughed and nodded. “As can I, after further reflection. I am still wretchedly sorry for you that we couldn’t accompany the gentlemen.”

“Did your husband by any chance say anything about Mr. Wagner?”

“Only that I was to be careful of him.”

“Did you understand that advice? Careful of him how? Such as, keep an eye on him, or don’t hurt his feelings?”

Lady Adelaide laughed again. “You are delightfully amusing, my lady. I strongly doubt my husband was overly concerned about the man’s feelings.”

Connie nodded. “Do you suppose we ought to follow him?”

“I have my other guests to think about so I cannot assist you in this, but if you do try to find out anything about the man, do be careful. I would hate to think you had gotten into trouble due to my inattention.”

“I shall be perfectly fine,” Connie soothed even as she turned her attention elsewhere. Peggy was nowhere to be seen at the moment, but Connie saw that Mr. Wagner was strolling about nearby, his shifty gaze seemingly everywhere at once.

She spent the rest of their time at the ruins trying to be as unobtrusive as possible while she also kept a close eye on whomever Wagner spoke with.
