“Not at all. I’ve just returned from a walk in the park with Lord Eastwood, so Mother is in full charity with me. But I would like a little escape from all that nonsense. Focusing on something useful would set me to rights.”

“Finding a husband with whom you can be happy should be considered useful, I would think.”

“The two needn’t be mutually exclusive,” Hilaria answered in a wheedling tone.

As she knew it would, her words prompted a laugh from her father as he slid his chair to the side.

“Pull that stool over, and you can tell me what you think of the steward’s most recent dispatch about the sheep at Sherton.”

The next hour passed in a flash before suddenly Hilaria’s maid was scratching at the door.

“My lady, surely it’s time for me to be starting on your hair.”

With a start, Hilaria glanced at the clock and sighed.

“Thank you, Father,” she offered as she rose to her feet.

“Not at all, my dear. I owe you my thanks. You had some excellent incites that I’ll pass along.”

There was a skip in her step as she followed her maid from the room.
