His bloodied thumb brushed across her lips.

Bile rose in Faye’s throat. Her mind screamed betrayal at the intimate exchange unfolding before her. The crushing feeling in her chest overwhelmed her, she scarcely felt the blade slack against her skin. Could hardly breathe.

The woman opened her mouth and closed her lips over Rune’s thumb. He tilted his head back and groaned.

Hot tears fell from Faye’s unblinking eyes. Betrayal and shame burned her. She desperately wanted to look away but found her gaze affixed.

The blade pulled tight to her throat, but Faye couldn’t bring herself to care as her tears fell one after the other.

“I saw you,” the man’s voice waived for a moment before he continued, “You’re lying. I know you love her.”

“Love?” Rune laughed.

“Have you sunk so low, you now use their words?” Rune asked before hissing as his brow drew together in pleasure. He exhaled, meeting the man’s gaze. “Does she suck on anything you put in her mouth?”

“Rune, stop. I’ll kill her.”

“I have a better suggestion.” Rune stood, shoving the woman over the counter between them. Pinning her by the neck. “I shall keep your whore and you can keep mine. Trade for a week.” Rune leaned forward looking into the woman’s haunting face before lifting his gaze. “Perhaps two. Would you like a demonstration of what you smell on my whore?”

Black swept through his gaze and dissipated, as he gripped the woman’s waist. His black-tipped claws piercing the fabric. A cruel smile played on Rune’s lips. “Does she make any noise?”

The sword clattered against the floor. “Rune stop.”

Faye crashed to her knees, and Rune was on the man the next instant. In a blur of motion Rune seized him by the throat. Faye flinched as his back slammed against the counter, cracking the wooden cabinet beneath it. Rune leapt up and braced a knee on the man’s chest, still pinning him by his throat.

Faye retreated to the corner of the kitchen on unsteady feet, sobbing.

The man only narrowed his eyes, stretched over the counter next to the woman, who eerily remained as Rune left her.

They spoke in low tones that didn’t carry to Faye.

A gravel filled voice said, “You can’t hurt me more than you already have. You can’t outrun a blood debt. I’ll come for her. But I’ll show mercy, I’ll just kill her.”

Faye jerked when the man spat in Rune’s face. He and the woman vanished without a word.

Rune wiped his face, leaping down. His expression changed when he met her gaze. Anguished shadows filled his eyes. He reached for her. “Vsenia.”

“Don’t fucking touch me,” Faye sobbed, slapping his hand away. Her stomach rolled, threatening to empty its contents.

“Alister needed to believe my words to keep you safe. Everything I said was a lie,” he said. His expression pleading, begging her to understand. To forgive him.

Rune wanted Sadi. He didn’t love her, she was just a body. Faye fled running to her sister’s rooms as Rune called her name following her.

PainslicedthroughRune’sheart as Faye fled. He followed, calling her name.

What have you done! The Ra’Voshnik roared, bashing itself against his awareness.

“Faye, let me explain,” Rune called, ignoring the creature. Agony clawed in his chest with each of her broken sobs. “Vsenia.”

“Sparrow.” Faye pushed open the door to her sister’s room.

Rune stood at the threshold as Faye stumbled blindly into the darkened room. Her sister and Vashien slept as Faye crawled onto the bed feeling for her sister beneath Vashien’s wing. “Sparrow.”

“Faye? Hey, honey what happened?” Sparrow brushed Faye’s hair back and wiped her tears. Hellfire blazed to life, lighting the room.

Rune narrowed his eyes as they adjusted to the light. Sparrow pushed Faye back, her gaze fixed to the blood trickling down her throat.
