“You have to know, nothing could ever change our friendship. You know that, right?” He looks intense, almost panicked.

I nod as much as I can with his grip on my face.

“Okay then,” he says, with a cocky grin. “Can’t leave here without doing this.”

Before I can ask what, he closes the distance between us and presses his lips to mine.

It’s soft and tentative, a warm, wisp of a kiss that feels like the sweetest of promises. He pulls back, his gaze assessing and cautious. His forehead presses against mine as he strokes my cheeks with his thumbs.

Then he kisses me again. This time, I kiss him back, our warm breath mingling as our tongues brush, gently but with a little heat. His hand slips down my jaw to the back of my neck, holding me the way he wants me, until we’re both out of breath.

He kisses my lips once more, then my nose and my forehead.

“You get me, Faye?” he whispers, his gaze intense.

I nod, understanding that this is something, that we’re crossing this line and leaving it in the dust together. “Yeah, I get you.”

“Really going to miss you,” he whispers.

“Me too,” I whisper back.

Then he lets go and gets into Freddy’s car. I stand there, dumbstruck, fingers touching my lips, wondering if I just hallucinated. I watch the car pull away, standing there until long after it’s turned the corner down the hill toward the freeway.

The buzz of my phone in my pocket startles me, and when I check it, I have a text from Zeke.

ZEKE: Hold that thought. ;)

I smile. And I respond in the only way I know how.

ME: You too.

It’s beenfour days since Zeke left for camp. I haven’t been able to get the feel of his lips brushing mine, or the taste of his tongue sweeping across mine, out of my head. It’s been hard to concentrate. Tonight, Aly tried to help distract me. We made guacamole and drank too many palomas and I passed out in my bed, still dressed and wearing a pair of ski goggles.

I wake up to the pleasant buzz of something against my hip. When I realize it’s just my phone, I dig it out of my pocket and curse myself for not changing out of my jeans before I passed out.

The text alert flashes and I squint, my previously drunk eyes not ready to be assaulted with such rude brightness. I re-open the screen and look at the time: 12:36 AM, which means it’s 2:36 in Dallas and he’s been out and up to things I don’t really want to think too hard about. I scoot up the bed and brace myself for whatever he has to say to me so late.

ZEKE: Can’t sleep. You up?

I look down and see the three dots thinking. Another message comes through.

ZEKE: Must’ve missed you. Talk tomorrow.

My heart flutters and I text back right away before he turns off his phone for the night.

ME: I’m here. What’s up?

I toss my phone down on the bed and then climb off my wrinkled comforter and change out of my clothes. The room feels fuzzy and a little spinny and I lean against the wall to pull off my skinny jeans. I change into a loose camisole and sleep shorts and then check my phone.

ZEKE: Oh, thank god. I had bbq tonight and I swear they brought me a whole cow.

I laugh out loud and shake my head.

ME: Tell me you didn’t moo at it.
