“We actually don’t have time for this,” she says with a cringe. “We have dinner reservations in twenty minutes. So, unless you can find a dress in twenty—”

“We should order pizza!” Gwen calls as she plunders a rack.

“Oh, I haven’t had pizza in forever,” Edie says, holding up a dusty peach gown with pretty lace trim.

“You should eat some pizza. It will fill out the bust,” June says, draping another gown over her arm.

My heart warms at the sight of these women digging through a back storeroom to find me a dress. I hate that they’re missing a special dinner out because of me, but when Edie holds up a sparkly gold dress and grins, it’s hard not to feel moved.

“I’ll just grab a coffee,” Zeke whispers in my ear. He brushes the back of my neck with his thumb and he presses a kiss to my shoulder as he goes.

My stomach flutters and I bite my lip.

“Oh my god, he isgorgeous!” Hadley squeals.

“And the way he looks at you! It’s like he’s going to eat you for dinner!” Gwen says.

I feel myself blush and I try to quickly occupy myself looking at the small rack the girls have gathered for me. Edie carries a long, blush, lacy number to the rack. It looks a little too bridal but is so pretty.

“It’s good to see you in love,” Edie says, and gives me a side hug.

In love? Is that what I am? I don’t know what I am, and I don’t know what we are, but the fact that I even need to ask tells me everything I need to know. I’m falling hard, I’m falling fast, and it’s too late to do anything about it.

“He’s back!”the dress shop owner calls out when I return with two blueberry decaf coffees in hand. She grins at me as if she has a secret.

I was unprepared for this. I hate being unprepared. And yet I’ve felt nothing but unprepared since I got here. Once I landed, I drove to Faye’s family house, but they weren’t there. Her mother sent me to the dress shop, where I was ready to wrap my arms around my girl, but five minutes in that nightmare of a dress shop showed me exactly what my girl was up against. I picked out Liza immediately. Even if she hadn’t introduced herself, I would’ve been able to figure it out from the moment I stepped into the store and she eyed me up like she could predict the score.

The way she talked about Faye… not just about Faye, but to her face. I’ll be the first to admit I don’t have a long fuse, but damn if I wasn’t ready to crack skulls.

“Zeke?” I hear Faye’s sweet, unsure voice from behind the curtain.

Edie runs through, followed by the other two bridesmaids.

“Aw, he brought you coffee!” the one with the red hair says.

“Is it blueberry?” the other one asks, sniffing the air.

“I heard it’s a thing,” I say.

“She loves blueberry coffee,” Edie says as she places a hand on each of my forearms and pulls me toward the back of the shop. The redhead lifts the curtain and Faye stands there, startled.

She stands in front of me, wearing a dark pink floor-length dress. It has a deep V neckline and hugs her curves, accentuating her hourglass figure and falling to a pool of lace on the floor. When I don’t say anything, she turns around, and holy bejeezus. The back is sheer lace, and I can see the outline of her bra. It’s borderline obscene, but what really does it in for me is the way it accentuates her heart-shaped ass. She looks at me over her shoulder and blinks twice.

“What do you think?” she asks, uncertainty lacing her voice, her posture, her every breath.

“You look beautiful,” I say, my voice catching in my throat.

The girls giggle, and I’m vaguely aware of the jingle of the door behind me.

“Are you sure it’s not tacky to match the bride’s dress?” Liza says, not even trying to disguise her malice.

Faye’s eyes round and she looks at Edie.

“Oh shoot,” she says. “Is this too close—”
