My stomach twists into knots as I wait to hear who she’s talking to.

“You can’t possibly look at me like this and not want to do something about it. I can see what it’s doing to you.”

Fuck. I don’t need to hear this. I should walk away. I don’t need to listen to Liza seducing some poor schmuck. And I definitely don’t need to hear what happens when she succeeds. Because Liza is persistent and I’ve never known her to fail.

“Come now,” she purrs. “It can be so easy. I know how to make you feel good. I know how to be the girl you need.”

“And what do I need?”

My stomach sinks. I have to clamp my hand over my mouth to hold back the bile that churns up my throat. I would know that deep, gravelly voice anywhere. But what is it doing in this bathroom with Liza? What is Zeke doing?

“You need someone who can attend to your needs,” Liza says.

It’s clear she’s leaning against the door, and my heart sinks as I realize the thud must have been them leaning into it. Together. I swallow hard, frozen, unable to move or say anything.

“Someone who gives even better than she gets. A sexy date for red carpets and public events, and a warm, tight place to come home to at night.”

I wait for him to say something. To tell her she’s wrong, or that she’s insane, or to untie him from the train tracks that are inexplicably inside this bathroom.

“I just hate that you’ve had to settle.”

My teeth hurt from clenching, and my breath comes in and out through my mouth too fast.

“Faye is sweet. But she’s… lacking. You know it. I know it. Everyone knows it,” she says, and I feel the hot anger and fear rise into my throat, my jaw, my eyes.

“Look at me, Zeke. Why would you want her when you could have me? And youcanhave me. Any. Way. You. Want.”

There’s a rustling sound behind the door and I squeeze my eyes shut as if that will make it all go away. As if I could just close my eyes and click my heels and everything around me would disappear.

“Liza,” Zeke says, his voice rough.

“I know,” she says, her voice softer, breathier. “I know, baby.”

“Faye? What are you doing?” Edie’s voice calls from the end of the hall and it breaks the spell.

I turn to her and her face falls. The door opens and Zeke walks out, his tie loosened, his sleeves rolled up, hair tousled, as if someone else had been running her skanky fingers through it.

I force myself to look back at the bathroom door as it closes too slowly. Liza stands there, wearing nothing but a red lace bustier and thong, looking not sorry at all.

“Faye,” Zeke says, his voice soft and broken. He touches my elbow, but I jerk away.

“Nothing happened,” he says, his eyes pleading with me.

But Liza is still standing behind him, doing nothing to cover up.

“I’m not blind and I’m not stupid.” My voice shakes as I pull my arm from his grasp and something cracks inside me. It’s as if I can feel the moment that it breaks apart.

“You can’t be serious.”

“Are you telling me that I’m not seeing this? That I didn’t just hear you both talking about me through the door?”

“It’s not what you think.”

“And what do I think?”

He grits his teeth. “You think I would fuck around with her? Her?Of all people, Faye. Don’t you know me better than that?”

I suck in a shaky breath and steel myself. “Exactly. Of all people, I would find you withher? How could you do this?” I lose my nerve and my voice quivers.
