“She looks like a princess,” says a small, sweet voice from the hallway.

My heart races for a split second until I remember Rachel and Ivan like to say good morning to their uncle Zeke and Dale the pig before they go to school.

“Or a zombie,” says another small voice.

Zombie? That’ll be the last time I bring him aPlants vs. Zombiesgraphic novel.

“She doesn’t look like a zombie, Ivan,” Rachel hisses. “She looks like a princess.”

“I guess she does,” Ivan says.

“Let’s let the princess sleep,” Zeke whispers, his voice taking on a different tone, sweet and playful. I swear my ovaries swoon.

“Are you sure she’s just sleeping?” the girl asks.

“She’s not dead, Rae Rae,” Ivan says, though there’s a hint of uncertainty to his voice.

“Of course she’s not dead,” Zeke says, squashing any doubt quickly.

“Maybe she’s enchanted?” Rachel suggests. “Or bewished?”

“Bewished? Don’t you meanbewitched?”

“No, I mean bewished.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means someone wished her here and now she is. In Uncle Zeke’s bed.”

I feel my cheeks burn hot and I can only imagine how badly Zeke must be squirming right now.

“So what?” Ivan asks.

“Well, then she needs a handsome prince to kiss her and break the spell.”

My heart flutters and it takes every ounce of willpower not to smile at the comment.

“I could try,” Ivan says, a hint of hope and doubt in his voice.

I bite down on the tip of my tongue, schooling my face into the neutral, sleeping princess.

“You’re not a prince, Ivan,” Rachel says with so much pity it’s comical, and I hear Zeke chuckle.

“Uncle Zeke?” Ivan says, and my stomach drops. “Are you gonna kiss her?”

My mouth goes dry and my breath comes up short, waiting for his answer.

“You’re handsome enough,” Rachel says, letting out a little sigh.

“Thanks, Rae Rae,” he says.

She coos and I imagine he ruffles her hair or gives her a little squeeze.

“You know, not all princesses need a prince,” Rachel says.

“You think she needs a princess?” Ivan asks, just as thoughtfully. “Teacher Krista is married to Teacher Laura.”

“Maybe?” Rachel says, and I swear I can hear Zeke stifling a laugh. “But maybe she doesn’t need anyone. Maybe she’s in Depends pants?”
