“Hey, Faye?” Megan is standing there, and Aly and Caro go quiet.

“Thanks for coming, Megan,” I say. Because I’m not sure what else to say.

“Oh, thanks for including me. It looks like this is right up Zeke’s alley.”

I shrug a shoulder.

“Can I get you a drink?” I ask, even though that’s what Zeke is ostensibly doing at the moment. I just don’t know what else to say.

“Actually, can I ask you a question?”

My stomach tightens, and Aly and Caro make themselves scarce.

“Sure. What’s up?”

“I was just wondering… is something wrong? I mean, is Zeke okay?”

I frown. “Yeah, I think so. Why? Did he say something?”

“No,” she says, shaking her head. Her cheeks flush pink and she suddenly looks so much younger. “I just… can I be honest?”

“Okay,” I say, feeling awkward.

She steps a little closer. “I don’t really know what I’m doing here.”

“What do you mean?”

“You all are, well, amazing. And you all have your shit together—stuff together. I mean. Sorry.”

“Don’t worry about it.”

“Zeke is probably the best guy I’ve ever dated. And I feel like I don’t really belong.”

“Oh, that’s not true.”

“If I’m being totally honest?” She lowers her voice and I steel myself for whatever truth bomb she’s about to drop. “I’m not really sure if he likes me likethat. We haven’t even kissed.”

I frown, recalling the kiss she planted on him after the game the other day. As if reading my mind, she flaps a hand.

“Well, not like a real kiss.”

My chest tightens and all I want to do is hug this girl. Even if I don’t like how they met and even if I don’t like that they’re together. She’s dating my best friend, and I should start acting like I’m his best friend who wants the best for him. And if she’s it, even if they’re not kissing, then why wouldn’t I want her to feel comfortable?

“I don’t know where you got that idea. We’re all a mess. We just drink to cover it up.”

She laughs and it’s a musical tinkling sound that is purely infectious. I smile.

“And as for Zeke,” I continue, leaning forward as if I’m about to let her in on a secret. “He is the best. But he also gets awful gas when he eats dairy.”

She snort laughs and I think I officially like her. I look over to where Zeke is talking to Freddy and Zach, and all three are watching us. Freddy is laughing and Zeke looks borderline terrified.

“Now, just wave at him and start laughing. That’ll drive him up the wall.”

Megan does just that, and as if on cue, Zeke storms off. We both laugh.

“Yep, that’ll do.”
