His ex.

My stomach twists. “She’s been asking about you, and I thought maybe you wouldn’t want to talk to her… you know, today.”

“Today?”

“Figured you had enough to manage today without adding my ex-wife?”

I nod, giving him a soft smile that I know doesn’t reach my eyes. “Thanks.”

He sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose.

“I had another phone call,” he says. I look up at him as I push my toiletry case against the mirror.

“We’ve got a kid out here, a little north? We don’t usually recruit down here, but since I’m here…”

“Go,” I say, with a shrug. “You’re here. You might as well.”

“It’d be tomorrow. I’m not leaving tonight.”

“If your ego was any bigger, it’d be your—”

“You do know you’re talking about loud again, right?”

“Yes,” I say.

He grins down at me and presses a soft kiss to my forehead. Like I’m a child.

“Want to get dinner?” he asks.

“Fine, but I’m not ordering off the kid’s menu.”

“What?”

I push past him and just keep walking as he laughs to himself behind me.
