“Thanks for the heads up. All the more reason to keep everything on the up and up.”

“Yep.”

The door opens, and the doctor pokes her head out.

“I gotta go.”

“Give your girl and that baby a hug from Uncle Freddy.”

“I don’t think I want my girl calling you Uncle Freddy.”

He laughs, hard and loud, and I end the call. I take a deep breath and wipe my hand down my face, trying to get my shit together. If there’s going to be an investigation, I need to stay on top of things. But we run a clean program. If they looked, there wouldn’t be anything for them to find. Still, something Freddy said sticks in my gut.

I go back into the exam room and shut the door softly as the doctor washes her hands.

“I was just telling Megan that everything looks really good. The genetic testing looks normal, and I see no reason we shouldn’t proceed as we would with any normal, healthy pregnancy.”

Megan grins, beaming at me from across the room.

“That’s wonderful!”

I smile back at her, but it’s forced. The relief I thought I would feel at hearing those words doesn’t come. If anything, I feel more on edge.

“So, it sounds like your little one was feeling especially showy today. The tech made a note of the sex. Would you like to know?”

I look up at Megan, but before I can say anything, she smiles at the doctor and shakes her head. “We want to wait.”

The doctor grins, but my chest tightens.

“I love when couples do that. It’s such a wonderful surprise in the delivery room.”

I stare at her, not really hearing what the doctor is saying as she feels Megan’s tummy and advises her on something or other. I shake the doctor’s hand as she leaves, and then Megan slips her narrow feet back into her sandals and slides off the table. She crosses the small space and looks up at me from under her dark bangs.

“You ready?”

“Why did you do that?”

“Do what?”

“You wanted to know the sex.”

“You didn’t.”

“But—”

“As soon as Dr. Walford said the baby was totally healthy, I sort of didn’t care. That’s all that matters, right?” She wears an easy smile, her blue eyes bright. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look more beautiful. Something warm and big bubbles in my chest, and I swallow hard, not ready to name it.

“You didn’t have to do that.”

“I know,” she says, threading her fingers between mine and squeezing my hand. “It’s more fun to be in it together though. You know?”

“Yeah,” I say. I cup her cheek and kiss her. And I keep kissing her. I’m suddenly desperate for her. I can’t stop touching her face, her back… my hand strokes the side of her swollen belly. With the baby I put inside her. There’s something about feeling her belly that makes me feel so primal, something that makes me want to be inside her immediately. And then there’s something softer, something that swells in my chest. She breaks off the kiss with a breathless laugh.

“I don’t actually have anywhere to be now, you know.”

“Thank God.”
