With the way the beach was eroded, I had to walk along the street to get to the party. There was more beach at the Bradshaws’. Fireflies flashed as crickets chirped, keeping me company on the short trek down. When I reached the gate, the same guy from the beach greeted me.

“You made it.” He grinned as he swayed on his feet. He was wearing the same red trunks from this afternoon, but had a half buttoned striped shirt on too. “There are drinks in the cooler. Help yourself.” He grinned as he tossed his arm around my shoulders. I could smell the beer on him. “These are the guys,” he motioned to the group of guys from earlier, “and this is your date.” He spun me, and I came face to face with Russ.

“Willow?” Russell laughed.

“Wait. You know her?” Mystery guy scratched his head.

“You know her too, dummy.” Russ sighed as my head swung between the two of them. “This is Willow Archer. We’ve known her since she was six.” He rubbed his palm down his face slowly. “Don’t let him fool you, my brother is smarter than this.” Russ stared at me.

“You’re Casey.” I smiled as memories from the last time I saw him started flitting through my head.

“I am.” He laughed as one of his friends handed him another beer. “Man, I didn’t recognize you. Last time I saw you, you were like eleven.” He chuckled as he tipped the can to his lips. "Sorry, bro. Guess you aren’t getting any tonight.” He slapped Russ on the shoulder before wandering off with his friends.

“Ignore him.” Russell shook his head. “Wanna soda or something?”

“Your brother offered me a beer. I think I’ll try that.” I grinned. I’d never had alcohol before, and here it was right in front of me.

“Oookkkay.” Russ laughed. “Willow’s trying new things tonight, huh?”

“Sure am.” I grinned as he handed me a cold can. I popped the top, and took a giant swig. It tasted awful, but I forced it down.

“It’s ok to not like it.” He laughed.

“I like it. It’s good.” I tried to hide the fact that all I wanted to do was spit it out. “So, I was supposed to be your date tonight.” I said it as more of statement than a question.

“You were supposed to be a girl for me to score with tonight.” Russ laughed. “My brother needs to go farther down the beach apparently.” He laughed again and what started out as a chuckle turned into a full belly laugh. “So do you?” He faced me and tried to keep a straight face.

“Do I what?” I forced another sip of beer down.

“Wanna make out?” He shrugged but kept his expression serious.

“I was hoping to get a real kiss tonight,” I muttered. The alcohol must have been affecting me more than I thought. Before I really knew what was happening, Russ yanked me to him, and sealed his mouth over mine. I didn’t have time to react before he plunged his tongue in. It wasn’t at all what I envisioned a kiss like this to be, and I pushed away.

“What was that?” I coughed as I wiped the slobber from my lips.

“A real kiss. Want another one?” He stepped closer.

“No.” I shook my head. “This is why we’re just friends.”

“But you don’t want to jump me right now, right?” Russ grinned.

“Right.” I coughed.

“Then mission accomplished. You got your real kiss out of the way so you can relax next time and not over think it.” He shrugged. “Now, let’s take a walk and watch my brother and his drunk friends do something stupid.” He held out his hand, and I took it.
