“No,” she assured him. “But I need you to leave.”

He frowned. “Why? If you’re not offended or angry.”

She set her hand on his arm, and the warmth from her fingertips burned into his skin. She swallowed. “I’m feeling vulnerable. Alone. And I’m not… I’m not strong right now. Okay? I don’t trust myself, and I don’t want to do something we’d both regret.”

If she was afraid she’d fall into bed with him if he stayed, he’d never regret that. But he knew Lainey would. So he nodded. “Okay. Do you have the sheriff on speed dial?”

“Yeah, I do.”

“Put my number on speed dial, too. I know Ron is dead, but if anything makes you nervous or uneasy, call me. Then call the sheriff. Okay?”

Her eyes were still unreadable as she stared at him. Nodded slowly. “I’ll do that, Brody. Thanks for coming back here with me. I’ll talk to you soon.”

He wanted to stay for a while. Make her a cup of tea. Sit with her in silence, if that’s what she needed. But she’d asked him to leave, so he’d honor her wishes.

Bending down, he brushed a light kiss over her cheek. “Sleep well tonight, Lainey. Ron won’t be sneaking around the house.”

But he wondered about the man who’d tried to shove her back into the burning building. Odds were good that guy knew who she was. Why had he wanted Lainey to die?
