“You weren’t paying attention to the story about my boss in a government agency?” She frowned. “Hell, no, we’re not part of the government. Dev and I own the business. We’d work for the government as contractors, but they’d have to pay us top money.” She scowled. “Especially after what my old boss tried to do.”
Brody nodded slowly. “Sounds like a great idea for that compound. Once you finish negotiating and own the place, come talk to me again. I think we could help you out with some construction work. I could use some extra money over the winter, and so could Brett and our men.”
Mel studied him for a long moment. Nodded. “We’ll do that.”
He asked Mel what she had in mind for the apartments, and she said, “Two bedrooms, a decent bathroom, living area and small kitchen,” she said immediately. She’d clearly given this a lot of thought. “I’ll have an architect come out, look at the place and draw up some designs. Depending on how much construction work you and your men have done, either you can be the contractor or I’ll hire one and you can do the actual work. Our goal is to get the place up and running as soon as possible.”
Brody nodded. “Winter is a slow time for us. As long as our animals get fed and cared for, we could work for you close to full time. Once you buy the place, we’ll talk about the details.”
Mel nodded slowly. “Sounds good.” She reached over to shake his hand. “Looking forward to doing business with you, Brody.”
Brody gripped her hand, then let it go. “Same goes, Mel.” He reached for Devlin’s hand. “Devlin.”
Brody caught Lainey’s eye, and she raised one eyebrow at him. He got the message -- she had some questions for him.
The idea made him relax a little. If she wanted to talk about his business, maybe she wasn’t planning on running back to Helena tonight or tomorrow.
He hoped he was reading her right. But he wouldn’t know for sure until Mel and Devlin were gone and Phoebe was in bed.
Lainey would have lots of questions when they were alone.
So would he.
