Epilogue

Three months later

“You ready to go?” Gideon asked her.

She looked up from her suitcase and smiled. “Good thing I pack light. This suitcase already weighs a ton.”

“We’ll work on getting cloths to leave at the compound so we don’t have to haul everything back and forth every three months,” he said.

“I thought about that. I’m bringing some things to leave there,” Alex said as she zipped the suitcase closed. Smiled at him. “I’m excited for the next three months in Montana,” she said. “The new attorney we hired is settling in nicely. She’s very sharp. Loves trials.” She shook her head. “Sierra says she’s the new Alex Conway.”

“I doubt that,” Gideon said, kissing her. “There’s only one Alex Conway.”

He kissed her again, then hoisted her suitcase onto the floor. “I’ll get this downstairs. You check the room one more time to make sure we’re not forgetting anything.”

Forty-five minutes later, they arrived at O’Hare airport. After thanking the Lyft driver, they towed their suitcases into the terminal. Checked in, then checked their luggage. As they headed to security, Alex glanced at her boarding pass. Frowned.

“Hold on, Gideon. They made a mistake. This boarding pass has us going to Fargo, not Helena.”

He snugged an arm around her waist, pulled her close then let her go. “No mistake,” he said. “We’re making a little detour. I’d hoped you wouldn’t notice until we got there.”

“You’re kidding me. You thought I wouldn’t notice that we were going to the wrong airport?”

“No, I figured it was a lost cause, but I hoped that my handsome face might distract you until we got on the plane.”

“Your handsome face always distracts me,” she assured him. Why were they going to Fargo?

When they boarded the plane, they were shocked to find themselves sitting in first class. “What the hell, Wolf?” She turned to stare at him. “First class? Really?”

“I didn’t book the tickets,” he said. “Mel did. So you can take it up with her.”

“Not complaining,” she said. “Just surprised.”

“I think it’s Mel’s way of welcoming both of us to the compound.”

“She’s certainly making an impression,” Alex murmured.

The two-hour flight went by quickly, and so did collecting their luggage. Before long, they were in an SUV, heading west.

“Where are we going, Gideon?” she asked.

He smiled. “Wait and see.”

“If you weren’t driving, I’d get it out of you,” she said.

“You probably would. Maybe you should just sit back and enjoy the drive.” He glanced at her, then looked back at the road. “Looks a lot different than the last time we drove from Valley City to Boughton, doesn’t it?”

Alex laughed. “Yeah. That time, all I saw was snow.”

“No snow forecasted for this trip,” Gideon said. “Thank goodness.”

They talked about the last time they’d driven this road. How she was afraid of him. Hadn’t trusted him. “I was looking for a way to ditch you,” she told him.

He snorted. “Not news to me. And you probably would have succeeded if that storm hadn’t been so bad. Thank God for that snowstorm.”

She reached over and set her hand on his thigh. “Yeah. That was our lucky day.”

“Even though it didn’t feel like luck to be driving through that weather,” he said.
