He hurried to his safe in the family room. He’d hidden it behind a huge picture that hung over the couch. Installed it on a day Alex was in court. By the time she got home, he’d cleaned up everything. The picture had been replaced. She’d had no idea he’d put in a safe.

Standing on the couch, he lifted the heavy picture and set it on the floor. Punched in the code, and when the safe beeped, opened the door.

Stared in disbelief. The files were gone.

Alex.

It had to be her.

Both enraged and terrified, he slammed the safe shut. Rushed into Alex’s office and tossed her file cabinet. Pawed through the files, scattering them around the room. She had a shit ton of files, but none were the ones that would save his life.

God damn it! The bitch had taken his files when she ran. How did she know? Had she bugged his office? Tapped his phone? She was a lawyer. She knew how to do shit like that.

Thank God he’d been smart enough to put that tracker in her business tote. He’d slit the lining in one of the pockets and dropped it in. Figured it would come in handy when he hired his hitman. He could tell the guy exactly where she was, so he could get the job done quickly. Now Jerry would use it to find his wife and take back what was his.

He opened the app on his phone. She was in East Nowhere, North Dakota.

He’d be there, too. As quickly as he could.
